Retro Spins: Electric Dreams

It's been so long since I've seen this movie, yet I still find myself remembering so much about it. It had comedy, romance, a fun sci-fi like story and Culture Club tunes. What's not to like?

The music video explosion meets the computer revolution in this modern fairy tale film. Its score features nine original songs performed by such talents as Jeff Lynne, Phil Oakey, Giorgio Moroder, and Boy George and Culture Club.

Once upon a time there lived a handsome architect named Miles (Lenny Van Dohlen). He owned a user-friendly computer named Edgar (Bud Cort of Harold and Maude fame). Miles was in love with the fair Madeline (Virginia Madsen), the beautiful cellist who lived upstairs. Unfortunately, so was Edgar. And Edgar would do anything to have Madeline to himself: lock Miles out of his apartment, bounce his checks, even call the police. The instruction booklet didn't cover this one. Miles was in big trouble!

Steve Barron, famed for Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" video, had directed with "delicacy and sweetness," (N.Y. Daily News) from a screenplay by Rusty Lemorande, Streisand's co-producer on Yentl. Dazzling special video effect counterpoint the non-stop music, including the smash "Love Is Love." The result is "fresh, original, touching" as "the screen bursts with rockets of energy" (Rex Reed). Electric Dreams, they really can come true. - Back cover of the original VHS

This album is a lot of fun. It's got great tracks, all of which are original strictly for the soundtrack. Not to mention a slew of popular artists from the 80's contributing to said tracks. Good stuff.

While I like this album from start to finish, I would be lying if I said I didn't have my "go to" favorites. Those being; Video by Jeff Lynne, The Dream by Culture Club, The Duel by Giorgio Moroder, Now You're Mine by Helen Terry, Love Is Love by Culture Club and Together In Electric Dreams by Giorgio Moroder and Philip Oakey. Mind you, that's sixty percent of the album.

This is definitely a soundtrack I recommend 80's music fans check out. Heck, even check out the movie if you haven't.
