Mail Call!

I knew I was expecting some things this week, but I guess the sheer volume of it sitting on my stoop really put it into perspective - And mind you, this was only about half the stuff. The remaining is still in transit for Saturday and Monday delivery.

Wow, what a massive box. Too bad the item inside was rattling all about. Thanks Amazon! Glad to see for all the money you rake in that you can't afford bubble wrap or even paper to pad things.

Inside was the newly released Retro Collection Hoth Ice Planet Adventure Game from Hasbro.

The very mild appeal hear, for me, was the exclusive Luke Skywalker (Snow Speeder) figure. I say mild appeal because quite frankly, it's extremely lazy. Hasbro has long since stopped putting any effort into their Star Wars line, and it clearly shows when they package an X-Wing Pilot Luke with a visor and call it a day. Especially when said product is twenty-five dollars. I really hope they don't continue this trend of releasing garbage board games with exclusive figures in this line.

Like all figures from the line, it comes with its own retro style cardback, which immediately got separated from the figure and thrown in the trash.

Though the figure itself is underwhelming, it at least was a step above last years Grand Moff Tarkin because Luke can at least hold the weapons he comes with. Tarkin could not.

The second package was unfortunately no mine. In fact, it wasn't even for my address. This one got put back at the mailbox with the words, "Delivered To Wrong Address" written across it.

For those of you interested strictly in toys, I'm sorry to say the remainder of this post will comprise of comic book related items, which brings me to this box.

On a whim, I purchased Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Ham number one through fourteen, and was pleased with myself. Then I found out there were three more issues in the series. Doh! Number sixteen was in today's batch, with number fifteen still in transit. Seventeen arrived earlier in the week.

I admittedly got a little miffed when I saw this package. Comics stuffed into an unpadded mailer, with the sender telling the post office to handle with care. How about you package things better?

Well, they did. Inside the envelope was this box with yet another note. Hey, Cosmic Trading Post, you're welcome, and thank you for packaging these boxes incredibly well.

Though you can only see the one on top, this is actually a stack of fifteen books, a consecutive run of The Amazing Spider-Man 544 through 557, plus annual 35.

I have mixed feelings about picking this batch of books up. First and foremost because my initial intentions were to only collect up to issue 441, as volume 2 started at that point. However, with the recent announcement of a potential Spider-Man spinoff film featuring Jackpot, I wanted to verse myself in who the character was. These issues pretty much cover her first appearance (with the exception of the Free Comic Book Day 2007 book - which I also have on order) through her death. Yup. Sony is making a film on a character who not only people don't know, but who is already dead in the series.

Next up was a much needed package.

The downside to collecting comics is of course the money you have to spend to protect them. Bags and boards are a necessary evil, along with storage boxes and title dividers. This batch of two hundred will hopefully last for a month or two, but probably not.

Last up was my order from MyComicShop.com. I only started buying from this website in the past six months or so, and I can't say enough good things about them. Every book I've ordered, either high value individual issues, or bulk purchases such as this one has been extremely well packed.

See what I mean?

A big push I recently made was to complete my Web Of Spider-Man and Spectacular Spider-Man runs. This is one of three purchases in transit which will accomplish this - With a couple individual purchases off ebay to fill in gaps where particular issues weren't available.

While this purchase would have completed my run of Web issues, I actually didn't get issue 129 in my order because apparently it was out of stock when they shipped. I have to admit, that really irks me when anyone does that. Don't sell what you don't have. Well, hopefully the copy I just purchased off ebay will arrive quickly.

Until then, I hope you enjoyed me sharing my mail haul with you all.

Comics Corner: The X-Men 35

Title: The X-Men
Issue Number: 35
Release Date: August 1967

Highlights
  • When you only pop into a title here and there, the editor's notes which reference specific issues really help to bring you up to speed quick - Such is the case with the one in this issue which points to a scenario from issue 32 which saw Professor Xavier being taken by Factor Three, which explains why the X-Men are currently looking for the group
  • Events unfold after The Amazing Spider-Man issue 52, and Spider-Man makes reference to his battle with Kingpin from that issue
  • The X-Men attack Spider-Man and he beats them all down
  • The X-Men try the old, "Oops sorry, I thought you were someone else," routine after the fight, and Spider-Man tells them all to pound sand

  • Does every super hero in the Marvel universe attack first and ask questions later? Are they all really that dumb?
Oddities
  • Issue was released one full month before The Amazing Spider-Man issue 52, and essentially ruins the cliffhanger of issue 51 (released the same month as this X-Men issue) where Spider-Man has just been defeated and knocked out by Kingpin

Retro Spins: Bright Lights, Big City

Michael J. Fox really lucked out when he took a little break from filming Family Ties to take on the roll of Marty McFly. He skyrocketed into super stardom, and quickly became a household name, and iconic 80's actor, and someone many fans still adore to this day.

Plunge into the electrifying and often dangerous nether world of Manhattan's seductive fast lane-a life of all-night parties and neon lights that has young Jamie Conway moving way too fast. As the struggling writer in search of his identity, Michael J. Fox gives, "a performance [that] is one of the most exciting in years" (ABC Radio Network). The all-star cast includes Kiefer Sutherland (Stand By Me, The Lost Boys), Phoebe Cates (Gremlins), Swoosie Kurtz (True Stories) and Oscar-winner Dianne West (Hannah and Her Sisters). Popular recording artists Bryan Ferry, Prince, Depeche Mode and New Order also perform on the scorching original soundtrack.

Jay McInerney scripted this forceful, startling drama from his bestseller that has been called The Catcher In The Rye of the '80s. See Michael J. Fox in a role unlike any he's ever taken on. Bright Lights, Big City shines. - Back of the original VHS.

When you start a soundtrack out with a song from Prince, that's a plus for me. It's even more so a plus when said song was released strictly on the album, and doesn't appear on his studio ones. Well, that is until it was re-released ten years later in an alternate version for his 1998 album, Crystal Ball. The track takes me right back to the better days of Prince's music. It's a fantastic song in the fashion of his alter ego, Camille.

The album then delivered me a sucker punch with New Order's True Faith. I loved this song in the 80's, but honestly never knew who sang it or what it was called. Over the decades, I honestly forgot about it. I'm so happy to have been reintroduced to it! As I dug into the history of the hit, I actually found out it was only released on the band's 1987 compilation album, Substance. I may have to track this one down as the version on the soundtrack is a remix.

Things took a quick downward spiral from there though. Song from there seemed to be rather uninteresting for me. Though I did dig the funky feel to the album, it didn't come with memorable tracks backing it. The soundtrack at least ended on a high note with the MARRS hit, Pump Up The Volume.

Overall, it was funky, but unmemorable. I'm glad I was able to reintroduce myself to True Faith, and the Prince song definitely stands out as a high point. I've definitely nabbed these tracks for my iTunes and iPod mixes.

Bewitched (Exclusive Premiere)

Bewitched
Exclusive Premiere
1998

In the mid to late 90's, there were a ton of toy manufacturers who seemed to pop up over night and subsequently disappear just as fast. This was brought on by a couple thing: 1) The current craze of Star Wars mania which was dominating toy isles, and 2) Companies like McFarlane Toys which were finding massive success with their unique branded toys.

Sadly, this tactic didn't work for 90% or more of these new companies. While it was an interesting era in time where we got a lot of unique brands that we normally wouldn't have seen, it wasn't financially substantial enough to keep many of these new toy producers alive.

Between 1996 and 1999, Exclusive Premiere filled a niche collector's market for figures based on classic TV. Starting with The Three Stooges, during their short lifespan they produced dolls based on the likes of Laurel and Hardy, Gilligan's Island, The Honeymooners, Happy Days, Beverly Hillbillies and more. It was a Nick At Nite fan's toy collecting dream come true.

One of the dolls the company produced in 1998 was Samantha from Bewitched. As was usually the complaint from collectors, while the box art was fantastic, the dolls themselves really didn't capture the look of the characters they were supposed to be representing. Take a close look at the face, and you'll immediately see what I'm talking about. It looks pretty bad - Even by doll standards.

The box, on the other hand, captures everything fun and exciting about the show. The little caricature of Samantha, as seen in the show's intro, fits in perfectly with the design. Though you might not be able to tell from the picture, the front of the box actually folds open on both sides to reveal a short history of the show. It's actually one of the most interesting aspects of the doll.

Despite the poor sculpting, I suppose if I was a massive fan of Nick At Nite television, these would be a must have for my collection. If for nothing else, the fantastic box design. With dolls selling for $20.00 and less, they wouldn't be too impactful on the wallet either.

Retro Spins: Fast Times At Ridgemont High

I've been watching a lot of 80's movies these past couple years for the first time in an effort to catch up on the classics I missed. Sadly, Fast Times At Ridgemont High is not one that I've had a chance to see yet. Mainly because it hasn't been available on any of the various streaming networks I have at my disposal.

Based on the humorous best-selling novel, Fast Times at Ridgemont High details the individual struggles of teenagers as they deal with independence, success, sexuality, money, maturity, school , and particularly with just making it through the formative years.

Fast Times was directed by newcomer Amy Heckerling in what New York Magazine calls "an auspicious debut." - Back of the original VHS

As I scanned the track list, I told myself, "With a whopping nineteen tracks on the soundtrack, there's no way on Earth this album can't have something to offer." With a click of the mouse and the first song kicking in, Jackson's Browne's Somebody's Baby, my hopes were immediately geared up for something great.

With the Eagles breaking up in 1980, it's somewhat fun to see the majority of them on this soundtrack contributing to solo tracks. Joe Walsh delivers Waffle Stomp and Tim Schmit offers So Much In Love. Additionally, Don Henley sings the ballad, Love Rules, while Don Felder hits with, Never Surrender. All of these songs are okay, but I can't help but wonder how they would have been if they worked together.

I've never heard of the Ravyns, but was wonderfully surprised by their fantastic track, Raised On Radio. Of course I also love that Oingo Boingo has a spot on the album with the track Goodbye, Goodbye, which was written strictly for the movie / soundtrack.

Overall, I didn't hate this album. I found a few tracks which made their way to my iTunes and iPod mixes, and sprinkled in among them were decent, but not amazing, tracks. But, I didn't hear anything that I found myself saying, "This is awful." Not once. I could definitely see myself listening to this album again in the near future.

It's amazing that for having so many songs on the album that there were a handful which didn't get included. Additionally, there are even more songs by major bands, such as Heart, which were recorded at the request of the producer, but never used in the film or on the soundtrack. How much bigger and better could this album have been?

    Marvel Team-Up Explosion

Ever since I started collecting comics again, I mean, really collecting, it was always my intentions to stay primarily focused on Spider-Man. Yet oddly enough, Marvel Team-Up was a series I kept skipping over. For the longest time, this was the extent of what I had, and only because they mainly tied into the Symbiote story line.

Of course as I type that, right on top sits a copy of issue three, which is the third appearance of Morbius. This one only ended up in my collection (at the time) because it was sold with issue 102 of The Amazing Spider-Man. Regardless, the moral of the story was my collection of the tile was minimal.

Then May 12, 2020 happened. It all started with the seller having a lot forty-six issues for only sixty-three dollars. I did the math, adjusting for the six issues in the lot I already had and came up with $1.57 per issue. Not bad. However, the description of the listing, while it did state the books were in good to very fine condition, didn't provide many details and the main photo was just one large stack of books, with the others being a very select few of the key issues. I decided I would think about it, and kept looking through the various listings. However, it was crucial to note that none of the issues were duplicates.

I came across a second lot. Same guy, different listing. This time it was for fifty-eight issues of Marvel Team-Up for seventy-two dollars. This lot had not only all the books from the prior mentioned one, but obviously ten more books. Once again I adjusted for the issues I already had and came up with $1.41 per issue. Better price, more books, heck yeah! However, I still wasn't ready to click the "Buy It Now" button. Why? Because this listing too had a photo that consisted mainly of one giant stack. This time, I added the listing to my watch list and reached out to the seller asking for more photos. Once again, no duplicate issues were included in the lot and the books were noted as good to very fine condition.

As I waited for a reply to come, if one would at all, I continued perusing the various listings. Then it happened. BAM! Same seller. one hundred twenty-three issues of Marvel Team-Up for one hundred eight dollars. No duplicates, all in good to very fine condition. For those of you familiar with the series, you may be aware that there are only one hundred fifty issues and seven annuals in the entire series. Another quick calculation, adjusting one final time for the issues I had already, and I came up with $1.55 per issue. Despite the limited pictures, it was a no brainer. I had to have this lot and I wasn't waiting to ask questions.

Literally within the span of seconds to buy it, and a few days to get it, my collection expanded with all these additional books.

Mind you, this photo did not include the issues I already had in the box. Those got added in later. More so a note for myself is that issue number one on the top of the box, as well as, Annual one further down in it, were not a part of the lot. I purchased those from two separate sellers the same day so I could cross them off my list. No sense in not having issue one. Additionally, with annuals two through seven being inclusive with the lot, I felt it appropriate to wrap up that collection by getting number one, so as to have all seven.

Now I won't lie and say that I was one hundred percent pleased with every issue. There are a handful of them which have writing on the cover or the overall condition is not really what I would have wanted in my collection. However, there can't be more than ten books which fall into this category, and I dare say it's probably even less than that. In all likelihood I'll probably just replace the three which are written on and call it a day.

Overall, I'm happy with my purchase. It's a main series wedged right in the main eras of Spider-Man, 70's and 80's, which I really wanted to get around to, but was always so busy buying other related titles and issues instead that I never did. The shear volume, and ability to cross off 85%+ of the series in one fell swoop certainly made it worth while.

    Little Big Planet (NECA)

    Little Big Planet
    NECA
    2015

Sackboy is one of the most memorable game mascots since the classics from the Nintendo era. He's a cute little fella that you want to just walk around with on your shoulder - If he were real.

The character got his start back in 2008 as the star of Little Big Planet, an action platformer for the Playstation 3. Since then, Sackboy has appeared in sequel installments of the title, as well as several spinoffs and ports.

In 2015, Sackboy made an appearance in plastic fashion from NECA. The manufacturer released two series, consisting of three figures in each run. However, Happy Sackboy was one of the figures from each wave.

     Happy Sackboy*Sad Sackboy*Kratos Sackboy

Each figure stood five and a quarter inches tall, and while they were articulated, it was minimal. Due to their design, they were also very fragile as compared to others from NECA. You definitely don't want to "play" with these too much.

    Happy Sackboy*Uncharted Sackboy*Quizzical Sackboy

Those looking to grab some of these figures won't be too disappointed at the price. Most of them hover around ten to fifteen dollars, with only the Uncharted and Kratos ones being slightly more. Definitely something to jump on now if you're interested.
