I remember watching the movie in the den with my family. My brother fell asleep, and in a hazy half awake half asleep daze he got up, walked over to a small trashcan in the room and took a whiz in it.
E.T. fell in love with M&Ms in the novel, but Reese's Pieces were substituted for M&Ms because Mars, Inc. said no to the inclusion of M&Ms in the production. Hersey's, however, said yes and the rest is history.
E.T. seems to me to be part of endless summers of movies from my childhood... Seems like every week we got a blockbuster movie that we just /had/ to go see all summer back then.
The first time I can ever remember getting a lump in my throat over a movie. That John Williams theme will forever be etched In my memory.

Reese's Pieces are a million times better than stanky M&M's anyway.
