Video Game Super Stars - X-Men Vs. Street Fighter (Toy Biz)

Toy Biz's Video Game Super Stars - X-Men Vs. Street Fighter is actually one of the larger, if not the largest series in the Video Game Super Stars lineup.  It features two series with a total of ten two packs for a whopping twenty figures - Though some of those are repainted variants.  Still, for fans of both Marvel's X-Men and Capcom's Street Fighter, this series was a treasure chest of toys, and a shame it didn't last a little bit longer to encompass a few more figures such as Guile, Storm, and all the other characters from the game.

The figures complimented the game perfectly, which quickly became a quarter eater in local arcades in 1999.  The video game series would go on to spawn several sequels, and be ported to several consoles year after year, and remains one of the hottest fighting games of this generation.

Ah, the arcade - Such fond memories.  Every month it was a mad dash to the local dive to see what the latest and greatest fighting game was.  Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, Primal Rage, Clay Fighters, the list goes on and on.  When Capcom announced that there would be a Marvel Vs. Capcom game, fans of both comics and video games went nuts.  It seemed like the perfect marriage.

The Marvel characters were based on their animated counter parts from the various animated series of the 90's, and some of the voice overs were even done by the actors of the shows.  This style, coupled with the animated style of prior Capcom characters seemed to match perfectly, and thus the series took off to become one of the most popular fighting game franchises of today.

Up to this point, Toy Biz had already produced a lion's share of Marvel Comic related toys, and in the prior year had also established the Video Game Super Stars line with their single Lara Croft figure for their Tomb Raider line.  It seemed only natural that the two would merge together to create a small, but fantastic line of figures.  The only disappointing factor of the series is that it didn't go beyond the four two packs.

As mentioned above, Toy Biz began their Video Game Super Stars series in 1997 when they released one, and only one, Lara Croft figure from the game Tomb Raider.  While Toy Biz probably didn't know it at the time, it would be the first of many Video Game Super Stars series that would encompass 1997 through 2001.

Marvel's Most Wanted and Marvel Super-Villains Vault (Toy Biz)

If ever there was a Marvel series of toys from Toy Biz that lived up to its name, it was Marvel's Most Wanted.  The characters produced in the line were newer editions to some of the most popular comic books from Marvel at the time, and fans were ravenous to have toys of them.  Though it was disappointing that this line only lasted for three figures, these remain some of the most popular figures in many collector's collections.

The three figures are; Blink from the Age of Apocalypse comic series, Spat and Govel from The Uncanny X-Men number 350, and X-Man, who first appeared in the 1995 series X-Man, and grew even more in popularity with the release of Origin: X-Man in 1997.

A year after Marvel's Most Wanted, Toy Biz produced the equally small, villain dedicated Marvel Super-Villains Vault series.  The series included the much sought after figures Stegron from the Spider-Man comics, and Typhoid Mary, as well as a highly detailed Ultron.  Much like the Most Wanted series, the only shame with this line was how short lived it was.

Venom: Planet of the Symbiotes and Venom: Along Came A Spider (Spider-Man) (Toy Biz)

In 1996 Toy Biz created a line of figures based on the highly popular Venom comic book mini series, Planet of the Symbiotes.  The series was geared towards collectors, and featured six inch figures with some really impressive articulation.  Each figure was also designed with an action feature which related to the actions the character portrayed in the mini series.

Though there were only five figures produced, there were several variants which doubled the size of the series.  Each figure with the exception of Scream and Venom had two variants.  Scream had no variants, and Venom had three - One of which remains one of the most difficult figures to obtain to date - The translucent yellow edition.

In 1997, a second series of figures based on the mini series Along Came A Spider was produced by Toy Biz.  It featured only four figures, and no variants.  Each figure came packed with a monster that had a leg action mechanic.

Marvel Hall of Fame (Toy Biz)

Marvel Hall of Fame was a series produced by Toy Biz which featured several rereleased figures from their prior lines, most of which were repainted, as well as many new figures based on characters that prior to the series were never made available.  The line was available only online at Puzzlezoo.com, and was a rather successful line lasting seven waves, and featuring thirty-five figures.

Series one was a basic set of figures which feature a repainted Colossus from series one of The Uncanny X-Men line, Daredevil and Invisible Woman from the Marvel Superheroes line, Deadpool from the X-Force series one line, and Rhino from series three of Spider-Man.

 Series two was labeled as She-Force, and featured only female characters.  They included; Black Queen, which was a repaint of a White Queen figure to create the new figure, Jean Grey, who was repainted from a Domino figure, Ms. Marvel, who was repainted from a Medusa figure, a repainted Spider-Woman from the Iron Man series two wave, and Storm from the X-Men series one wave with a few more paint details - such as the yellow stripe down the front of her outfit.

Series three switched back to the basic line of figures, and included Iceman from series two of The Uncanny X-Men line, another Invisible Woman figure from the first Fantastic Four line, a new Spider-Man, Venom from the Marvel Superheroes line, and Wolverine in his yellow costume with the head of Wolverine from the third series of The Uncanny X-Men.

Series four was the first series in 1997, and included Cyborg Cable from the fifth series of X-Force, Green Goblin from the third series of Spider-Man, Samurai Iron Man from the fourth series of Iron Man, a new Spider-Man in his black suite, and Wizard from the fourth series of Fantastic Four.

Series five was released under the sub title Unmasked, and featured Carnage from the sixth series of Spider-Man, Deadpool, who was the same as Deadpool II from the sixth series of X-Force, Magneto, who was a repaint of the figure released in the Age of Apocalypse line, Venom from series four of the Spider-Man line, and War Machine who would be the same from series four of Iron Man, but now featuring a removable helmet.

Series six reverted back to the She-Force sub series and stayed as such throughout the remainder of the series.  The figures released were; Dazzler, which was an all new figure, Marvel Girl, who was created by repainting a Spider-Woman figure from the Iron Man line, Ms. Marvel who was created by repainting a Phoenix figure, Black Cat from the Spider-Man line, but with a tail added, and the all new Wolfsbane.

Series seven was the final wave of figures from the Hall of Fame line, and featured a bald Elektra who was created by repainting a Psylocke figure.  A fun fact about this figure is that the headband is actually the belt from Psylocke's waist.  The remaining four figures were;  Shanna the She-Devil who was created by repainting an Invisible Woman figure from the Fantastic Four line, Savage She-Hulk was created by repainting a La Lunatica from the X-Men 2099 line, and a plastic shirt added, Silver Fox, who was created by using the head of the Ninja Force Psylocke and body of Invisible Woman with a cape added, and finally, Viper, who was created using the head from a Generation X White Queen, and the body of a Psylocke figure with a belt added.

Marvel's Famous Couples (Toy Biz)

Please forgive our short post.  We're taking a little breather from the last two which were quite time consuming.

The Famous Couples line was a set of limited edition two packs which featured popular couples from the current Marvel era of its time.  Though there was certainly room for the series to grow, Toy Biz left it at just the three sets.

The first set featured Cyclops and Jean Grey.  Cyclops was produced using the body of Archangel II, with the head from the Monster Armor Cyclops.  Fun fact - on the back of the figure you can see the open slots where Archangel's wings would normally be attached.  Jean Grey is unique in that it features her in her X-Factor outfit.  The figure was produced by repainting the body of Invisible Woman, and the head of Medusa.

The second set produced featured Gambit and Rogue.  This particular version of Gambit was initially scheduled to be released in the Age of Apocalypse line, but was dropped unexpectedly from production.  With that said, this version is technically an all new sculpt since it was never released until this two pack hit shelves.  Rogue is nothing more than a repaint of White Queen with a cloth shirt added.

The third and last set produced was Spider-Man and Mary Jane.  At this point there have been so many Spider-Man figures produced with the same pose that it's difficult to tell where it actually originated from.  The head is that of the same head used for Peter Parker many times over as well.  This was actually the first time Mary Jane was produced in figure form, and despite being nothing more than a repainted Invisible Woman from series two of the Fantastic Four line, she is done really well so as to garner no complaints - At least not from us.

The original concept for the comic book series was conceived by artist Rob Liefeld during his years with Marvel Comics. The team made their first appearance in New Mutants number 100, and since then have gone on to be as popular as most of the "X" titles produced by Marvel. The team has featured iconic heroes such as Cable, Deadpool, Domino, and even Wolverine - Just to mention a few. Oddly enough - The title is one of the very few at the helm of Liefeld's that actually got less popular when he left the series (most have gotten more popular).

With the numerous mutants at their disposal, and a strong license already well utilized, Toy Biz developed the below series to coincide with their highly popular Marvel based toys. X-Force began as a sub series of Toy Biz's The Uncanny X-Men (later shortened to just X-Men) series, but encompassed so many waves of figures that collectors began treating it like its own series.  In its five year run, almost fifty action figures were produced, making it one of the most largest sub series to any toy line to date.

We interrupt our Toy Biz month for a look at this all new wave of TMNT figures coming to a toy store near you now!

New on shelves is the all new sub series Battle Shell for Playmates hot toy line, Nickelodeon's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.  Right off the bat you're going to notice some huge changes to the figures from the original release of the Turtles from series one.

Each figure is meticulously sculpted to match their cartoon counterpart from head to toe.  However, this does come at the sacrifice of some of the more apparent detail from the original four such as the scales and lines that were sculpted in.  This could be considered a good thing though because it also means that each figure is an entirely brand new sculpt.

The packages sport a banner down the side, much like the prior released Stealth Tech figures which displays the sub series name, Battle Shell.  Flipping the package over reveals a neat little window in the package which displays each figure's open shell with (some of) their gear inside.

 

Articulation wise, the figures stand out as some of the best to date.  They have ball jointed heads, ball joints at the shoulders, swivels and bends at the elbows, swiveling wrists, hinge joints on the thighs, and finally, swiveling and bending knees.  With all of that it's really difficult to find any fault with these guys.

The storage shell itself is on a hinge which opens from left to right.  Much like the larger versions of the Battle Shell figures which were released some time ago, each figure comes with an assortment of weapons that can packed inside.  However, unlike the larger figures which sported chain based weapons, these are all sculpted in one piece, which means constant bending will result in stress marks on the plastic, which of course leads to eventual breaking.

All and all these are great figures to add to your collection, and we dare say are far superior to the first wave versions.  However, much like all the newer released figures they are a bit difficult to find right now, so be ready to put some time into tracking them down.  Especially with the holiday season quickly approaching.

The Uncanny X-Men (AKA X-Men) (Toy Biz)

When it comes to incredibly large lines, Toy Biz's The Uncanny X-Men certainly stands out as a line to be reckoned with.  In it's eight year span, the series managed to churn out seven series of basic figures, a few vehicles and playsets, and about two hundred figures related to various sub series and gift sets.

Truth be told, Toy Biz's X-Men line is a series we've wanted to tackle here at The Toy Box for a long time.  However, because its so large, and so many X-Men related figures were released during this time period, its difficult to tell which figures in the sub series were actually intended to be connected to the basic line, if any at all, and this is really a best guess effort after several months of research, and a whole lot of photograph work.  While we believe this to be complete, if you don't see something that you feel should be a part of the series, or if you see something you don't think should be here, please let us know what, and why.  Please note that we have not included the X-Force series as while this line started out as a sub series, it really took off on its own as a series unto itself.

We've labeled every photo with its series title, and to help organize everything, with the exception of the basic series which is listed first, everything else is listed in alphabetical order.  All the photos are also date stamped with the year that the particular represented series came out.

It's also important to note that while the series launched as "The Uncanny X-Men" in 1991, by 1994 the series title was shortened to just "X-Men".  The majority of the sub series lines fall under the "X-Men" title.

In closing, if you are a major package variant hunter, then it is worth noting that Canada produced and released several limited two pack sets from the various sub series, and even had their own X-Men/Spider-Man two pack waves.  These sets were limited from 4,000 to 6,000 pieces, and are very difficult to get at reasonable prices.
