Peter Parker, Decisions - My Commission Artwork Expands

My commission wall has grown slightly.

For those of you keeping up with my posts, you may remember my series entitled, "Peter Parker, Decisions", wherein I ask artists of the comic world to doodle me a picture of Peter holding his two classic costumes, deciding which one to wear.

Though I only have four pieces to date, each one has been a fantastic addition to my personal collection. So far I have a drawing from (in order received)...

Rick Leonardi

Jim Shooter

Jim Salicrup

G.I. Jigsaw

...and my newest addition...

Keith Williams

One of the things that stands out to me is that you kind of get a historic snapshot of Peter Parker depending on what era the artist drawing it favored. For Jim Shooter, we get more of a 70's look, Keith Williams and Jim Salicrup provide an 80's vibe, and Rick Leonardi is 90's all the way. Good stuff!

I'd love to add more of these to my collection, but I have to be selective. Prices are subject to each artist's discretion. As such, it can be quite an expensive endeavour. Further, they require patience. Most artists won't do them on the spot at a show, and I have personally experienced waiting over a year to get one back. Well worth it for a one of a kind collectible piece.

Awesome Con 2024 - Part 7: Convention Books, And Prints

As the sun sets on Awesome Con 2024, it does so as often my convention posts end, with the showing of my updated convention book. Well, actually, there really wasn't any sun. It was cold and raining the entire day of the show, and only got worse as the morning turned to day, and then evening.

But I digress.

Not too many new signatures added this time around, and probably not a bad thing. This book is filling up, and people are struggling to find a spot to sign. Most seem to have an aversion to signing on the back. I may need to start a new book.

In addition to my Amazing Fantasy 15 reproduction, I also got a couple more signatures on my Heroes for Hope book, adding Art Adams and Joe Rubinstein to the mix.

While there are no new signatures on the back, I'm including it here just because.

Rounding everything off were a series of prints I picked up, as well as a fantastic commission piece, all of them signed by their respective creators / sellers.

Miles Morales by Mark Bagley

Carnage, Venom, and Spider-Man by Mark Bagley

Mary Jane Watson by Mark Bagley

I guess I have a Mark Bagley wall now

I'm not big on picking up prints of comic covers, but this McFarlane Spider-Man issue one print was nagging at me while I stood at Jim Salicrup's table. Then of course, it's $20.00 for one, or $40.00 for three, so who's going to buy just one?

Initially, I was going to put these going up the stairs to my loft, but decided that I would inevitably bump into them and knock them off the wall if they were there.

They look okay next to my prints purchased
from Art Suydam at Big Lick NOVA 2023.

Look closely at the prints above. Three of the four mirror each other. Art's just happen to be zombie iterations. Hmm...Maybe I should reorganize these to be more symmetrical.

I wasn't initially going to grab this print (below) from Jeph Loeb, but when I saw it was also pre-signed by Tim Sale, I figured, why not? Two signatures for the price of one (and a half). Truthfully, the piece is drawn by Sale. As a writer, Loeb had nothing to do with this work other than taking money for it, and adding his signature to it.

When the creator is charging $20.00 per commission, and promises you can come back in an hour to pick it up, and on top of that says to pay him when you get the drawing, it really becomes easy to give in and pick up a commission.

And that's how I ended up with my second piece in my "Peter Parker - Decisions" series. Jim Salicrup's artwork may be "basic" in terms of what one would expect in a commission piece, but at the end of the day, it's a unique style, and it looks great! Especially next to my first one done by Rick Leonardi at Big Lick NOVA 2023. I STILL have not received the commission piece I bought from Jim Shooter at Big Lick NOVA 2023.

You have to enjoy the inside joke as well. At my request (insistence), Jim poked fun at McFarlane by "hiding" one spider on the drawing, and adding the number "1" under his signature. As I've mentioned before, McFarlane would hide spiders in his covers, and though not at first, would eventually start numbering how many were hidden under his signature for readers to find. It was a nice touch to his drawing for the editor who worked hand and hand with McFarlane for many years at Marvel.

Can you spot the hidden spider?

A simplistic piece, but beautiful. I love it!

And with that, my trip to Awesome Con 2024 is wrapped up, and behind me, but Big Lick NOVA 2024 is hot on its heels.

Awesome Con 2024 - Part 3: Jim Salicrup

Jim Salicrup was a late entry to Awesome Con 2024, but one that was going to set me back quite a bit.

Jim Salicrup signing my mountain of books

Mr. Salicrup was great to meet. He shared so many stories as he signed books, and drew pictures for folks, and overall was amazing. He was pleasant, kind, and seemed genuinely happy to be there. He shared stories about his time working with Todd McFarlane, regaling the tale of how it came to be that Todd would number the hidden spiders on his issues, as well as his time working on the various titles he was involved with.

He was thrilled to see this copy of Transformers issue three, and went into detail on the various Easter eggs he included in it. He showed me the little hidden picture of U.S. 1 tucked behind in one of the panels.

He also showed the panel of Nick Fury, and talked about how he couldn't refer to Godzilla by name, but that was indeed what the character was talking about. Apparently, Nick Fury had made appearances in prior stories, which showcased him and S.H.I.E.L.D. battling it out with the creature. However, for copyright reasons, the name could not be used in the Transformers issue.

Speaking of copyright issues, Jim also wasn't able to use the traditional blue and red Spider-Man costume in the issue. Hasbro owned the rights to Transformers, and at the time of release, Mattel featured figures from Secret Wars, which hadn't yet revealed the black suit version, only the traditional one. Hasbro would not allow for cross advertisement of a competitive toy company, thus the red and blue suit was barred.

Jim also doesn't get the credit he deserves for his collaboration in the creation of Venom. Credit often goes only to Todd McFarlane, and David Michelinie. Jim has said many times he isn't interested in monetary notoriety for the character, nor does he diminish that the majority of it was indeed driven by Todd and David. However, he would still like his fair acknowledgement in the credits.

Well, while Marvel holds out, I'll give you your due, Mr. Salicrup, by having you sign my two preview issues of Venom's appearances.

...As well as the issues you were involved with that he made his cameos and first appearance.

Keeping in procession with getting things signed within the symobite story arc, I brought with me all the issues of Marvel Age which featured advertisements or previews, which Mr. Salicrup was noted as editor.

I also took one of my Todd McFarlane signed copies of Spider-Man issue one to have Jim sign (as editor).

Since I was apparently going for broke, I also got Mr. Salicrup to sign my run of Kraven's Last Hunt.

I got other stuff signed by Mr. Salicrup, but that's a post coming down the line. Even then, there was so much more I could have brought with me if space allowed for it. For now, that wraps up this one, until next week when I return to Awesome Con 2024.
