After their two previous albums being their biggest hits to date, the Pointer Sisters quickly returned to the studio to record 1986's Hot Together. While the album would falter in sales, and spawn no hits for the Billboard Hot 100, the title track would become notable for its inclusion in the films Spaceballs, and Stakeout. While not as popular, Set Me Free, is also a notable track for being utilized in the film Jumping Jack Flash.
I noticed a definite shift in music style for the album. Rather than feature synthpop / new wave gold, the girls returned to a more R&B style, which is fine, but honestly isn't really my favorite style of music.
Despite this, there were standouts, which included Goldmine, and Hot Together. The latter was the tune I bought the album for, even though I already have it on the Spaceballs soundtrack.
While I don't typically go in for ballads, I will admit that the June Pointer led, All I Know Is The Way I Feel, resonated from her fantastic vocal performance, and solid guitar solo cut in the middle.
Overall though, it was just a pretty average album. Not much really stood out, and there was definitely a decline in quality tracks from their previous two albums. While I didn't expect it, I was hoping for better.
Though they wouldn't release their next album until 1988, the sisters would host an NBC special based on themselves in 1987. The event would showcase live performances, follow the girls around the LA nightlife, and see special appearances from Bruce Willis, the McGuire Sisters, and Whoopi Goldberg. It would also garner the sisters a nomination for a Primetime Emmy Award.
However, the best thing to come from it, if you ask me, is yet another classic commercial from Coca-Cola, which featured the Pointer Sisters. That's where the true goodness lies.
Tomorrow will see the wrap up of my time with the Pointer Sisters with their 1988 released, Serious Slammin'. It would be their last album to chart in the Billboard 200, and continue their overall decline in sales and popularity.
