A Letter To Team Ultimate

While reading issue ten of Ultimate Spider-Man 2024, I started to notice something that didn't sit well with me. By the end of the book, I came across a blurb that encouraged readers to reach out to the team at ultimateoffice@marvel.com. So, I did, following the directions to add, "Okay to Print" to the subject line.

Hello Team Ultimate,

I stepped out of comics a long time ago, around 1998, and didn't return to the Marvel Universe until the buzz for Ultimate Spider-Man 2024 started to stir up the internet. Overall, I really dig the story, and continue to tune in monthly, sitting on the edge of my seat as things unfold. Something definitely feels like it's building, and I anticipate the slow burn will have a big payoff.

I did notice something with the artwork though, especially in issue ten of Ultimate Spider-Man that makes me have to ask a question. Is the artwork being reused? I'm noticing what seems like the same drawings in multiple panels, but altered ever so slightly, either by zooming in or out, changing angles, adding extra detail sketch or hash marks, changing mouths or the eyes to focus in a different direction, etc.

I hope this isn't the case, and the team behind the series is just that good to provide consistent artwork across every page.

Sincerely,

-Matt

Will they post my letter? I don't know. Will they email a response? Probably not. But, we'll see.

So, what am I talking about exactly? Well, let me show you.

(1) J. Jonah Jameson sitting in a car talking to Ben Parker
(2) J. Jonah Jameson sitting in a car drinking coffee
(3) J. Jonah Jameson continues his conversation with Ben
(4) The conversation continues, but zoomed in

(1) Ben Parker speaks to James Wesley
(skip to 3) Ben Parker's mouth and eyes are slightly altered from 1
(back to 2) We see an unamused James Wesley
(4) Looks like the same image as 2 with the hand removed, and glasses now glinting

(1) Names on a bulletin board
(2) Zoomed out and expanded, meaning that panel 1 is just a zoom in of this one

Too many similarities from panel to panel - eyes and eyebrow are all the exact same
and look at the nose in three of the panels. These even have the same sketch mark.
The hair is also exact in some of the panels, but slightly altered in others.

Mind you, this is just some of the examples I noticed while reading through the current issue. I really hope, as I said in my letter, that the team is just that good to provide this type of consistency from panel to panel because this looks sketchy to me, no pun intended.

As someone who came from an era of comics where the greats seemed to pour their hearts into every panel, it would be a real shame to see that this is where comics have come to (if the case). Especially when artists are paid per page. How could you be paid for a full page when fifty percent of your work is copied and pasted? Again, I hope that's not the case, but honestly, I have doubts. Are they valid?

Big Lick NOVA 2024 - Convention Book And More

As my convention book fills up from show to show, I find myself being more selective of who I ask to sign it. I'm looking for the people who mean something to me, and not necessarily just anyone sitting around the show. Two reasons for this. The first, I already stated. Space is getting limited. The second reason is that I just don't feel like paying people for an autograph if I really don't know who they are.

Big Lick 2024 yielded only four new signatures.

Signed by Guy Dorian Sr.
at Big Lick NOVA 2024.

Signed by Art Adams, Jeph Loeb,
Jim Salicrup, and Joe Rubinstein
at Awesome Con 2024.

Signed by Art Suydam, Jim Shooter,
Mark Waid, Michael Golden, Renee Witterstaetter,
Rick Leonardi, and Ron Marz at Big Lick NOVA 2023.

Signed by Al Milgrom, Alex Saviuk, Bob Hall,
Bob McLeod, Bob Wiacek, Brian Michael Bendis,
Chris Claremont, Howard Chaykin, Jim Starlin,
Jon Bogdanove, Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez, Judy Bogdanove,
Kieth Williams, Klaus Janson, and Walter Simonson
at Baltimore Comic Con 2023.

Guy Dorian Sr. (Gold)

I only opted for Guy Dorian Jr. and Sr. because they were taking donations as part of the Hero Initiative. A buck a piece was sufficient, considering by the end of the day I'd already donated close to $100.00 between the other comic creators.

Signed by Christopher Priest,
Guy Dorian Jr., and John Beatty
at Big Lick NOVA 2024.

Signed by Mark Bagley
at Awesome Con 2024.

Signed by Howard Mackie, Jae Lee,
Pop Mhan, and Terry Kavanagh
at Baltimore Comic Con 2023.

Christopher Priest

Guy Dorian Jr.

John Beatty

I also added a few more signatures to my symbiote suit Spider-Man figure from the defunct Marvel Legends Retro collection. Today, I added Christopher Priest, AKA James Owsley, John Beatty, and Louise Simonson.

Also signed by Jim Shooter, and
Rick Leonardi at Big Lick Nova 2023,
Al Milgrom at Baltimore Comic Con 2023,
and both Art Adams, and Klaus Janson
at Awesome Con 2024

Louise Simonson

When signing, Mr. Priest made an interesting comment about how he was going to sign above Al Milgrom, and that (sarcastically in tone) he would "love" that. I guess there's some bad blood there.

John Beatty

Unlike prior shows, I actually took the time during Big Lick NOVA 2024 to do some serious shopping for books.

First up, I grabbed my bajillionth copy of Todd McFarlane's Spider-Man issue 1. The seller I found this at had it on his wall, but priced at just ten dollar. Of course I'm going to take it for that price.

Next up, I grabbed Conan The Barbarian issue 241. I'm not a reader of this title. This was on my list for one specific reason - It's a Todd McFarlane cover. I picked this one up from Joe, the dealer who I met years ago, and who helped me put together my collection of 80's G.I. Joe figures. He actually thanked me a year or two ago, saying that it was my purchases from him that helped him build his business, and ultimately open the roving convention comic store he takes from show to show.

There was another book on my list, What If (Volume 2), issue 105. While I did find one at the show, it was graded, and I think the seller may have fallen out of a tree and seriously hurt their head. They had it priced four times more than its value. So, unfortunately, I didn't get to come home with that particular book.

What I did, however, come home with, was a book I had been wanting to pick up for a while. In fact, this is what I went looking for at Awesome Con earlier in the year, but couldn't find one.

Edge Of Spider-Verse issue 2 is the first comic book appearance of Spider Gwen. She has since evolved into one of the most beloved multiverse characters in the Marvel universe. This book set me back a hefty price, but I expected it would.

Though I bought a weekend pass, and was still under budget, since I managed to accomplish everything I set out to do in one day, it really wasn't worth my time to go back for day two. I'm okay with that. I came away from Big Lick NOVA 2024 very happy, and that's all that matters.

Next stop, Baltimore Comic Con!

Big Lick NOVA 2024 - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

When Big Lick 2024 was first announced, it came with word that the show would be a reunion for the cast of the 80's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon. This was all I needed to hear to purchase my tickets in advance.

However, as the show drew closer and closer, I really started to shift my mindset. I was no longer necessarily interested in their autographs. The main reason I felt this way was because I saw it getting too expensive, and that really wasn't where I wanted to allocate my budget for the show to. Rather, I waited patiently as further announcements were made, and instead opted to focus on the comic book creators who were coming.

Even as the final week for the show slowly ticked by, I really didn't have any interest. I reluctantly packed a few DVD related items to take with me for the sole purpose that if the mood randomly struck me, or I couldn't find anything else at the show, purchase wise, that I might, a very skeptical might, get something signed.

I had previously gotten Renae Jacobs to sign my Complete Collections DVD cover at Retro Con 2022. So, this was actually the only thing I intended on bringing with me to the show. As you can see, I did end up pulling the trigger, and getting the rest of the guys to sign off on it, putting their autograph, and respective character name. I was glad I did. To have these all together really looks cool.

Prior to going across the convention hall to the actors section, I got all my comic related stuff taken care of, which was also the area where Guy Gilchrist was sitting. As I finished up with him, he asked me, "Is there anything else I can do for you?" To which I thought for a moment, and then that's when I pulled out the other item I brought with me.

Though not directly involved with the show, more on that below, I asked if he would sign the bottom of the turtle van, which also serves as the case for a different set of the complete series. When he did this, he also added an awesome piece of artwork to it. That was really all it took. Now I was going on a mission to get the other cast members to finish signing it.

I asked each member to not only sign, but write a quote, and put their character names, each in their respective colors. I really dig how the end result looks like the van was hit with graffiti. What also stood out was how friendly and personal each member of the cast were.

That last statement will now make little sense because this is where I say Cam Clarke was actually the least memorable of all of the cast members. While he was friendly, he wasn't as outgoing as the others. He stayed seated, shook hands, signed, and then moved on to the next person as quickly as possible.

I remember his queue more than I remember him, and that's because of the guy in front of me who fell on the ground. As people scrambled to help him, he informed them he had kidney issues, and hadn't drank any water while at the show.

"Leonard Leads!
Cam Clark
Leo

Barry Gordon and I actually had a couple of moments together. The first was when he spilled his soda on his table, and I handed him the paper towels I was carrying in my sweatshirt pocket. Always be prepared! The guy in line in front of me was kind of a jerk about it. When I stepped back in line, he laughed and said, "Risking losing your spot in line to be nice?" To which I responded, "Yeah, but I'll be memorable to him."

Barry and I then had a second moment when we talked about The Color Purple movies and soundtrack. What was comical about this was that he tried to have that conversation with said jerk in front of me, but the topic went over his head. I totally bogarted his moment with Mr. Gordon, and he knew it. At least that's what the dirty looks he kept side eyeing me with said.

"Be Chill, Homeboy!"
Barry Gordon
Donatello

Rob Paulson refused to sit behind his table. Instead, he stood in front of it greeting every single person with a handshake, asking their name, and having a conversation. He'd do voices of the characters people were there to have items signed for, and smiled widely the entire time. He was thoroughly engaged with the fans, and genuinely seemed happy to be there.

"Turtle Power"
Rob Paulsen
Raphael

Renae Jacobs sadly didn't have many people at her table. I don't know why fans would get the four turtles to sign something, but then give her a proverbial middle finger. She was just as much a part of the show as them. For those who did go to her table, she was very kind, and offered to have photos taken. In fact, she was the only one of them who didn't charge if you wanted a photo. She seemed thrilled that I gave her the main top area of my item to sign, even making a comment about how she's typically relegated to a small out of the way area when signing for people.

Townsend Coleman seemed the second most energetic between he and Rob. While he did sit behind his table when signing, he initially stood up and walked around to the other side for every single person who came, just to shake their hand and greet formally. He had the most fun when kids were at his table, and would get them to shout out catch phrases with him. His was also the slowest moving line because he appeared to have one and a half times the people as the other three guys.

"Turtle Power!"
Renae Jacobs
April O'Neil

"Cowabunga Dudes!!"
Townsend Coleman
Mikey

And now we flip the item over to show you the doodle and signature of Guy Gilchrist I showed last week. Guy seemed a little hurt that he had been relegated to the comic book creator side of the show, and not sitting with the cast members of the show. I told him that I'd be happy to grab one side of the table, and help him move it over there, to which he responded, "We (referring to his assistant) almost did that this morning."

I can understand the reasoning Big Lick did this. As I said above, Guy didn't work directly on the show. Instead, he was the publishing manager, and sometimes artist, on a series of TMNT kids books that utilized the same look and design as the show. While this did sometimes involve editing scripts down to kids story book sizes for publishing, the series also included original work. As such, while related to the show, it wasn't necessarily part of it.

An awesome turtle doodle and signature
from Guy Gilchrist

Honestly, though, it worked out for me. I don't know that the signing of this piece would have worked out the way it did if I hadn't visited his table first. Like I said in my post last week, it was kind of a last minute decision to have him sign it, and that's what prompted me to get the rest of the signatures. Otherwise, I may very well have skipped it.

While Guy Gilchrist was my most favorite interaction of the day, getting my turtle van DVD case signed was the highlight item. This thing looks so awesome with everyone's signatures, blurbs, and character names. This is definitely the centerpiece of my cartoon DVD collection.

Big Lick NOVA 2024 - Guy Gilchrist

Hands down, my all time favorite interaction at Big Lick NOVA 2024 was meeting Guy Gilchrist. When I first stepped up to his table, he asked me, "What can I do for you? I've got anything you like!" To which I responded, "Muppet Babies on DVD?" I wish I could recall his verbatim response, but basically, he said no to that one, and explained that it was Disney who was holding up its release. Figures...Jerks.

Mr. Gilchrist's table was filled to the brim with Muppet memorabilia, sketchbooks, original artwork (which was also for sale), and a slew of prints. Everything was so awesome to thumb through, even though the majority of it was beyond my budget.

More on this item next week!

Guy has worked on several 80's properties, many with Jim Henson. He is also credited as managing the publishing and merchandising of several big franchises, such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (the original cartoon), Pink Panther, Tom and Jerry, Looney Tunes, and Muppet Babies, to name a few. I spent quite a bit of time at his table talking about his various projects. Overall, it was my absolute favorite interaction of the day.

If my budget were unlimited, or his prices lower, I certainly would have picked up more from his table. Since both weren't, I had to limit my options to three prints, and the above item, which I'll talk more on next week. He personalized every print he signed.

"Cowabunga dude!"

"You remind me of the babe!"

"Dream big dreams!"

These look great mixed in with my other cartoon related prints, and of course, my massive collection of cartoon series on DVD.

Prices for Guy were all over the place, and depended on what you got. As noted above, three prints were $125.00. Smaller prints were three for $100.00. Original art varied. What was odd was that despite his high prices, his signature on the item noted above, with the sketch, was only $50.00. But, again, we'll talk about that next week.

Big Lick NOVA 2024 - John Beatty

The main comic talent I came to Big Lick NOVA 2024 to see was John Beatty. John is one of the most well known inkers and artists of the 80's, having worked on hundreds of books across all spectrum of heroes and villains. In addition to getting a lot of books signed, I wanted to get a sketch from him. Unfortunately, when I told him what I wanted, he said he didn't do that type of in depth work at shows. He favors remarks, and head sketches, but these were frankly priced too high. You can see his prices on the flier to his left.

Instead of getting any drawings, I opted to focus on what I brought with me.

First up was my entire run of Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars. This was a must have for my Spider-Man symbiote series, being the mini-series where it all started.

Beatty was charging $10.00 per signature, with exception of Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars number 8, which he charges $30.00 for. You can thank the scalpers for that.

Lastly, I picked up a few prints. Though I'm not going to turn down a good Spider-Man drawing, my goal moving forward is to also broaden my horizon of images to hang on my wall. Spider-Man is great and all, but I'd like to start getting some variety. What better way than to start with this awesome Punisher.

Beatty also had a Wolverine and Captain America one, but since his prints were three for fifty, I of course gravitated to the Spidey related ones from there.

My girl dropped this in
the parking lot, causing damage to
the top...so that was disappointing

All and all, not a bad bit of signatures. Though it took me a while, well past the initial draft of this post, I made my way to Michaels for frames, and got them hung up with all the others.
