      • Attuma shoots him dead for daring to suggest any of this
      • Turns out Epititus was right, and Lemurian troops are attacking Atlantis at the same time
    • The Atlantean army also makes its way through Washington, and as they bare down on some American soldiers, are stopped by a mysterious figure intervenes, ripping a chunk out of the wall, and blocking the enemies attacks
      • After the smoke clears, he's vanished
    • Back in Manhattan, the Fantastic Four all go down to the Megasaur, leaving Spider-Man standing ground on his own
    • Ghaur claims one more bride for Set in Susan Storm
    • The third wave of the attack comes from Attuma and his men storming the streets
    • Spider-Man lures the large creature to an electric billboard, jumping out of the way as it attacks
      • The electricity from within shocks the creature, going all the way to the Atlantean driver atop, knocking him out, but not affecting the Megasaur

      • The widow asks how she will feed her children with her husband gone
      • Sable coldly answers that she prays, and then elaborates by saying to pray that the Pack Board doesn't find her husband as grossly incompetent as she does
        • Again, the guy is dead
    • As anger fills Sable upon her return home, we're taken to a flashback mission with her, Kuryova, and other Wild Pack soldiers
      • The flashback is interrupted by her accidentally breaking a crystal cat statue in her home, which takes her to another flashback of her father training her
        • It serves as an origin story, I suppose
    • Silver Sable remembers another mission with Kuryova, calling him a coward and incompetent for abandoning his post, allowing good men to be killed
    • The story then flashes to her and her uncle, explaining how she came up with her name
    • We learn now how Kuryova died on the mission
      • In a cowardice attempt to retreat, he leaves injured men behind, but as he climbs the ladder to a rising helicopter he's hit by enemy fire
    • The Pack Board determines him a coward, insubordinate, and derelict of his duties, denying all benefits his wife would have received upon his dead
      • Silver Sable coldly instructs her to be told all of this
  • Story VI: Saga Of The Serpent Crown Part XI
    • Art by Mark Bagley, inked by Keith Williams
    • First appearance of the Serpent Cartel, and members Gergory Gideon, Justin Hammer, Leland Owlsley, Sebastian Shaw, Obadiah Stane, and Cornelius van Lunt
Low Points
  • Story I: War Zone: New York
    • It's unfortunate the story continues in an Annual I won't be reading
  • Story II: A Random Miracle
    • The story is all about Captain Universe, and doesn't feature Spider-Man at all
      • Get your own book!
  • Story V: A Mute Player For Deaf Ears
    • Another story that doesn't feature Spider-Man, but at least Silver Sable is a character who got her start in the pages of his books, and occasionally reappears
  • Story VI: Saga Of The Serpent Crown Part XI
    • I didn't read the other nine parts, so I didn't read this one either

    • During all of this, Tyrannus begins the summoning resurrection of Set
      • Strange intervenes, but the incantation is done
      • Except it's not Set, it's a demon from the dimension of Dormammu
      • Tyrannus doesn't care, as long as the being is bound to his control
    • Tyrannus's mind control over Viper slips loose, and she flings him into the pentagram on the floor, causing him to also loose control of the demon that swallows him whole
      • Strange sends the demon back to its domain

    • Two days later, Jonathan Caesar receives a photograph from Mary Jane of her and Peter embraced in a kiss
  • Story V: Saga Of The Serpent Crown Part VI
    • First appearance of Regina
Low Points
  • These Atlantis Attacks annuals are too long, and extremely difficult to get through
  • Story I: The Serpent In The Shadow
    • Having not read all the various annuals across Marvel Comics, I've no clue what happened to She-Hulk from The Amazing Spider-Man Annual 23
    • This story is continued in Daredevil Annual 9
      • This in and of itself is a problem, see oddities
  • Story V: Saga Of The Serpent Crown Part VI
    • It has nothing to do with Spider-Man, and since I'm not reading the other chapters, I skipped this one
Oddities
  • Story I: The Serpent In The Shadow
    • Editor's Day Off: After meeting a group of homeless people, Spider-Man thinks about his living situation with Aunt May, and concludes, "At least we have place a live."
    • Editor's Continued Day Off: In the same panel of a typo, Spider-Man's eye lenses are colored red
    • Is The Editor Coming Back: As Spider-Man spies on some ambulances, he thinks, "I have a read bad feeling about this."
    • Editor Is Fired! The end of the story references that it continues in Daredevil Annual 9
      • The problem is that Daredevil was only up to Annual 4 at this point
        • Further the cliffhanger ending of Story VI references Daredevil Annual 4 as the continuation point
  • Story II: Free Fall
    • Odd cliffhanger ending where Hobie learns that Mulligan was dead before hitting the ground, having gotten his skull bashed in while walking the rafters

    • First appearance and death of Antilia

Low Points
  • Good art can't save this over bloated mix match of stories from not being a sludge to get through
    • It's too long
  • Story I: Abominations
    • It's continued in Punisher Annual 2
  • Story II - My Science Project
    • It's really just a retelling of Amazing Fantasy 15 from a different perspective
  • Story VI - The Saga Of The Serpent Crown Part IV
    • The story has nothing to do at all with Spider-Man
    • It too continues in Punisher Annual 2
  • Unless you read fourteen different Annuals, you're not going to get the full story of the two main arcs, making this Annual pointless to read
    • $2.00 was a lot of money for a kid back in 1989, and having them drop this on a book that doesn't even contain a relevant story to the next issue of Spider-Man is kind of crummy
      • What kid had twenty-eight dollars in 1989 to buy fourteen comic books?

  • The Arranger is afraid to give this information to Kingpin, since it was he who sent the Punisher to attempt an assassination on the Lobo brothers, which started all of this
  • At the Bugle, Peter tells Kate Cushing about the upcoming war, and questions if Jameson will publish it
    • They go to ask him, but are told all they have is rumors, and that he won't publish anything about it
      • Peter's spidey senses to continue to go off in the presence of Jameson (Chameleon), but he can't figure out why
  • Joy Mercado stops Peter on his way out, and asks if he's got time to talk, specifically about Gloria Grant, and the trouble Joy thinks she's in
    • At a coffee shop, Joy shows Peter the photos of Gloria with her boyfriend, and informs Peter his name is Eduardo Lobo
      • The puzzle pieces immediately click, and Peter understands why his spidey senses were going off around the man
  • Peter walks through the parking garage and his spidey senses once again go off
    • Though he doesn't see the initial threat, it's from Chameleon and Hammerhead meeting in a car, reveling over the coming gang war
  • Mary Jane tells Aunt May and Kristy that she's off to work, and will miss Peter coming home again
    • But is she really? Remember, Jonathan Caesar is blocking all of her modeling work, and she's been spending her nights out dancing
      • Meanwhile, Kristy has got a lot of strange bruises all over her skin, and Aunt May takes notice
        • Aunt May also notes she's gotten incredibly thin
          • Remember, Kristy had a secret a few issues ago when Peter heard her sick in the bathroom
  • Kristy overheard the conversation with Mary Jane and Peter about the coming gang war, and says she's worried about him, and him finding out she loves him because she knows if he finds out that they'll send her away
    • A skin and bones Kristy looks in the mirror and tells herself that she's so fat
      • She wishes she was thin and beautiful like Mary Jane
  • Spider-Man enters Gloria's apartment looking for her, but instead finds shredded clothing with an "L" on it, deducing it belongs to Eduardo Lobo
    • In the pocket is a receipt for an aircraft hanger rental
  • Kingpin's tower is on lockdown, and security efforts increased
    • The windows are now bullet proof, double the guards are on sight, and each has a briefcase with nerve gas
      • Meanwhile multiple entry points have been rigged with explosives, and the windows covered with titanium barriers
        • The Arranger updates Kingpin, who tells him that when the fight is over they will discuss the problems he has created
  • Spider-Man heads to the hanger, and is immediately met by gunfire
    • He dispatches the men quickly, but is attacked by two wolves, who announce themselves as Los Hermanos Lobos, The Brother Wolves
      • Spidey finally understands - the Lobo brothers are werewolves
        • The fight is cut short by the Lobo's schedule, as they break away, and board a helicopter
          • Spider-Man lands a web line on it, and tags along for the ride
            • His trip is cut short by gunfire which forces him to jump into the river
              • The helicopter arrives at the Kingpin's tower, directly outside the Arranger's window
  • The issues ends on a cliffhanger ending with Aunt May frantically pounding on the bathroom door for Kristy, being told by her boarders that she's been in there for hours
    • Kristy is lying on the floor, unresponsive
Low Points
  • I'm admittedly getting a bit tired of this storyline
    • It's drawn out way longer than it feels like it needs to be
      • The whole Lobos / Kingpin war, and Chameleon posing as Jameson isn't all that interesting an aspect to dwell this long on it
        • Now we have the whole cliché Kristy storyline coming into the mix
  • We never see where Mary Jane is
    • Did she actually get a modeling job? Or is she out dancing again?

    • He webs it, and gently (as possible) crashes it
      • As Spider-Man frees the general from the back, Scorpion poises for a fight, but all of this is interrupted by Rhino who crashes through the remains of the van

Comics Corner: The Amazing Spider-Man 318

Title: The Amazing Spider-Man
Issue Number: 318
Release Date: August 1989

Highlights

  • McFarlane hid three spiders on the cover, can you find them?
    • Here's a hint, look for two different styles
  • First appearance of General Chester Musgrave, Sholly, Morris, and Watanabe
  • Scorpion is training with his new tail, which now features a deadly acid spewing stinger, as well as enhanced flexibility and movement
    • He's received the enhancement from Justin Hammer, who's hired him to kidnap General Musgrave, but Scorpion has his own agenda as well, the death of J. Jonah Jameson
      • Hammer intends to give Musgrave to "certain parties in Europe" in exchange for favorable trade agreements
  • Reference is made to "various issues" of Iron Man, and "current issues" of Web Of Spider-Man and The Spectacular Spider-Man
    • Reference is also made to The Amazing Spider-Man 312
  • Peter and Mary Jane are looking at another apartment, but it's neither attractive nor affordable for them
    • Mary Jane has at least finally landed another modeling job
  • Peter asks Jameson (still Chameleon in disguise) for a photo assignment, but is told nothing is available as he storms by and slams his office door closed behind him
    • Joy Mercado tells Peter that Jonah is acting weird even for himself, and it's like he's not himself
  • After being kept waiting all day for her photo assignment, Mary Jane is told the buyer has opted to go in a different direction, and that they'll call her if something comes up
    • See oddities
      • After a brief fight with Peter over being out all night, the two quickly make up
  • Also keeping odd hours is Norman Osborn, who sneaks away from his family at 3:00 AM to an old building his dad used to own
    • There, he has a Green Goblin suit, and states he has one more task to complete before setting his mater plan in motion
  • While walking to class, Peter comes across Sholly, who's making protest signs with her fellow classmates
    • She tells Peter that they're going to demonstrate at the National Guard Armory where General Musgrave is receiving a medal, and asks if Peter wants to tag along
      • Though he hates cutting class, he does think that some photos would possibly be sellable to the Bugle
  • Both Spider-Man and Scorpion make their way to the Armory for the ceremony
    • Apparently another upgrade to Scorpion's tail is that it can inject hypnogen into people, allowing him to extract information from them under interrogation
  • As Spidey takes photos of the event, he notices Joy Mercado and Lance Bannon in the the crowd, and realizes that there's no way Jameson will buy his photos with Lance getting clear shots from right up front
  • Scorpion burst in, and Spider-Man is quick to jump into action
    • We learn of another new upgrade to Scorpion's suit, that being a transparent membrane over his eyes, which vaporizes anything that touches it, including Spidey's webs
  • As Lance Bannon snaps photos, he exclaims that these will help Jameson sell thousands of papers
    • This is all Scorpion needs to hear to alter his plans
      • Not wanting to help make Jameson more money, he takes Musgrave captive, and tells everyone to bring him Jameson in one hour, or the general dies
  • Did you find the hidden spiders?
    • The first one is located in the top portion of the brick wall, near Spider-Man's left foot
    • The second one is located in the bottom portion of the brick wall, near Spider-Man's right foot
    • The last one is a different style from these two, and hidden in the rubble underneath Scorpion's right fist

  • If there's a hidden Felix the Cat in this issue, I couldn't find him
  • This story checks a lot of boxes
    • Action
    • Mystery
    • Suit upgrades
    • Cliffhanger ending
    • Fantastic McFarlane art
Low Points
  • None
Oddities
  • Let's pause right on the front cover
    • If Scorpion is wearing a mask, why are his teeth showing?
      • This appears to be an aspect of his costume, and it makes no sense
  • After being let go from her modeling assignment, Mary Jane goes out dancing with random men until 3:00 AM
    • Maybe I'm just old fashioned, but that wouldn't work for me if I was her husband

        • Spidey isn't unconscious though, and punches Chondu's head clean off
  • The Headmen try to escape in a battle vehicle, but She-Hulk rips it to shreds with her bare hands
Low Points
  • It's not a very well written story
  • It's never explained where the real She-Hulk came from all of a sudden, and we only get a brief three panel explanation about the She-Clone, literally right at the end of the story

Oddities
  • The story takes a one-page sidebar for She-Hulk to tell jokes, and when it cuts back, Spider-Man has already defeated Mysterio, and taken his briefcase

  • Inside the embassy, Moon Knight fights his way to Marlene
