Retro Spins: U2 - October

During The Boy Tour, in support of their debut album, U2 began writing material for their follow-up, October, and eventually entered the studio to record and release the album. While this process was going as smooth as it could be, certain aspects were beginning to unfold, causing members to question if they could stay in a rock band.

As professed Christians, both Bono and The Edge were part of a fellowship group known as Shalom Fellowship, which also included U2 member, Larry Mullen Jr. This would lead the boys to be conflicted with the Christian faith and being in a rock and roll band. So much so, that the two would announce their departure to the band just before heading out on the October tour. However, when questioned if they really wanted to leave the band, and reminded of the commitment they'd already agreed to, the two stayed.

Fire, and Gloria would be the first two singles for the album, and both would be followed up with music videos. MTV was at a point where it was becoming as popular as radio stations, and the group knew that getting their videos aired would be integral to their longevity, as well as serve as an extension of their creative work.

Upon its release, October received more of a mixed set of reviews, in contrast to their debut which were typically favorable. While some praised it for its rock appeal, others would state the lyrics were silly, and Bono taking himself too seriously. In a retrospective review, Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic stated he felt the band was trying too hard to move forward, with Bono straining too hard to make a statement.

So, this album is exactly what I equate U2 to. Bland, and boring music. October is quite mediocre at best. Mind you, I'm not going to go as far as to call it bad. It just doesn't have anything worth listening to more than once.

I think I'm also not a fan of Bono's voice. For some reason, it just doesn't work for me. I don't like it.

This is the complete opposite spectrum I was on with my listening session of their debut album. Whereas last time I was eager to jump into their follow up, here I am now with little to no interest. I mean, I will because I own the albums. I'm just not looking forward to it.

I really don't have much more to say about this one. Just kind of a generic album.
