Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back Widevision
Topps
1995
Ah, the inevitable follow up to my post on the first Topps Star Wars Widevision trading card series. It's time to continue on with The Empire Strikes Back.
With the exception of these cards being based on Episode V, you're really just getting more of the same here. Those lovely oversized cards full of Star Wars frames straight from the movie. They're beautiful and a fun way to "watch" the film.
The series once again began with a set of promo cards which were available through various channels; card shops, comic shops and / or conventions. The images are the same you'll find in the base set with the only difference being the blurb at the bottom of the card as well as the back which promoted the series. For most collectors, this was simply another thing to chase down to ensure their set was complete.

The base set which contained 144 cards was larger than the original A New Hope which featured 120 cards. Do the extra twenty-four cards add any more to the set? I suppose. Though I found a few cards which could probably have been cut out without affecting the overall "story" they were telling, this didn't amount to twenty-four cards.

Once again the series provided collectors with an opportunity to pull premium chromium cards featuring the fantastic conceptual artwork of Ralph McQuarrie. However, with ten to collect, it would take quite a few boxes to pull a full set.

However, buying full boxes may not have been such a bad idea - A case even. Why? Because this time around, Topps offered an awesome set of six mini posters inside each box. A box topper if you will.

Much like the prior A New Hope set, the major draw to this series for me was the fact that I am also an avid Star Wars on home video collector. For me, this was just another unique version of the film to own.
