Birthday Countdown CD Extraviganza, Day 8!

With the ol' birthday swinging back around...again...already...I decided to celebrate the month right by counting down the days with a new (used) CD a day. It's like an advent calendar, but tweaked specifically for me, by me, from me!

Day 8

Another classic soundtrack that often gets left out of the numerous "Best Soundtracks of the 80's lists," is Toto's Dune. Yeah, that's right. Toto. The album was so epic that the band continues to play cuts from it during their live shows. Check out Desert Theme, my personal favorite. You'll want more after you hear it.

Retro Spins: Vixen - Vixen

Vixen hit the scene in 1988 with their hit, Edge Of A Broken Heart, then seemingly disappeared overnight. While this appears to have been the case on the surface, the band actually continued on, releasing three more album, 1990's Rev It Up, 1998's Tangerine and 2006's Live & Learn. However, it would only be their first two albums which contained the original lineup of Janet Gardner, Jan Kuehnemund, Share Pedersen and Roxy Petrucci.

A little interesting history on the album are the number of tracks. Vinyl aficionados will find themselves shorted one song. Charmed Life, AKA track eleven, could only be obtained by purchasing the cassette of CD version.

Edge Of A Broken Heart starts up the album nicely, and would ultimately become the song most people remember from the band, despite it not being their highest charting track. While the song would eventually go to number twenty-seven, their follow up single, Cryin' would peak at number twenty-two. Regardless of the numbers, I think what leads to Edge being a stronger track lies within the writers behind it - Richard Marx and Fee Waybill (of The Tubes). It's a solid song, perfectly crafted to be a mainstay on the airwaves.

Unfortunately, the rest of the album tries, but doesn't find a foothold. Of all of them, Desperate, was the only other one to really stand out. Even then, as much as I wanted to add this song to my shuffle, I didn't see the longevity in it. It was just okay. The best of mediocre, if you will.

At a run time of forty-three minutes, I think what also hurts this album is that it's too long. Debut albums should be fine tuned, removing filler, cutting to the chase, getting to the point and delivering only the best the band has to offer. It should establish the band's sound, highlight their strengths, and most importantly, leave us wanting more.

When you shovel it in to the point of overflowing, and worst of all, it's just okay, it not only becomes too much, but kills my desire to hear more. By track seven, the only thing I really wanted was for the album to be over. It's because of this that I ended up giving the remaining songs sixty seconds to hook me or be skipped.

The final nail in the coffin was that of the eleven songs, only four have any writing contribution from the band. Never a sign of a strong group when they can't even write their own material. Equally, and as mentioned above, it doesn't highlight the band's own personal style when, in essence, they're just a mouthpiece for someone else.

Overall, Vixen is a band you can skip on.

Birthday Countdown CD Extraviganza, Day 7!

Day 7

Though Tron isn't one of my favorite movies, I've wanted to get the soundtrack for the two Journey tracks, Only Solutions, and 1990's Theme. That said, I'm really excited to fire this one up and hear the score from Wendy Carlos. Tron is kind of one of those forgotten soundtracks from the era.

Masters Of The Universe On DVD

Fan of He-Man? Want to own it on DVD? You have options for bringing home the series on DVD, many of which are still in print.

2005 was right in that sweet spot of time where Mill Creek was obtaining the rights to several 80's cartoons, and releasing them to eager fans who longed for home video releases to add to their personal collections. Among this was the original Masters of the Universe Series, its spin-off, She-Ra, Princess of Power, and the 90's sequel, The New Adventures of He-Man.

All of these would be released between 2005 and 2007 in multiple volumes, as well as several offshoot "special" DVD's.

The first disc of mention is the 1985 He-Man / She-Ra Christmas Special. Running just shy of forty-five minutes, this holiday special is a must have not only for 80's cartoon fans, but those who also enjoy light hearted Christmas shows during the holiday season. It's one that I personally have in my rotation during the month of December.

A budget friendly ten episode collection was released this same year, but didn't really make sense in the grand scheme of things as Volume One of Season One was released at the same time.

Volume One, Season One, formally kicked off the series, and contained half of the episodes from season one. Unique to this release was the artwork along the left side of the spine, which when placed side by side with all four sets from Masters of the Universe, all three from She-Ra, Princess of Power, and both sets from The New Adventures of He-Man, created a connected mural.

Both seasons one and two of Masters of the Universe were spread across two DVD sets, and wrapped up in 2006.

Also in 2006, both She-Ra, Princess of Power, and The New Adventures of He-Man saw their first releases. Season one, part one, of She-Ra contained half of the episodes of the season, while Volume one of The New Adventures of He-Man contained the first half of the series.

Both series concluded in 2007. However, there were noticeable differences in both sets for their final volumes. While prior releases had a raised artwork cover, these final two releases (Season Two / Volume Two) had flat covers.

She-Ra also got a "best of" DVD set. However, unlike the He-Man set, this volume contained the full feature film of The Secret of the Sword. While the movie is also the first five episodes of the show, this version contains the original opening, closing, and runs from start to finish without interruption.

The New Adventures of He-Man remain out of print as of this release, with volume two being the most difficult to find.

As noted above, when placed side by side, the spines of the sets create the below mural.

In 2008, BCI Eclipse brought the 2002 series of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe to DVD across three volumes. As an homage to the original Mill Creek series, Best Buy released an exclusive slipcase which continued the mural of the original DVD sets. While this only came with volume one, the case was large enough that the remaining two volumes could be placed in the package as well when they were released / purchased.

However, all the DVD's were mass released, so the only perk to the Best Buy exclusive was the slipcase itself.

With the entire series now out, BCI packaged the set in its entirety under one package, and discontinued the individual volumes.

Sam's Club released an exclusive box set of the complete series. However, in review of it, there isn't anything noticeably different, other than the reversed artwork image on the front.

For those looking for a more budget friendly option, ten episodes were released on a single DVD in 2009, and second volume in 2010.

Mill Creek re-packaged the series in 2011, this time putting all of season one and two on their own single volumes.

Additionally, they released two budget friendly collections which each featured twenty episodes.

She-Ra, Princess of Power, was also repackaged as the full series.

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of He-Man, Mill Creek created what could have been THE Masters of the Universe boxset to own. Sadly, glaring omissions, and a high price tag  made it a lackluster, and expensive release.

While the set contains the entire run of the original Masters of the Universe series, as well as the 200X sequel, it only contains twenty of The New Adventures of He-Man episodes. With the latter show still out of print, this set could have been a definitive must have for many collectors who missed out the first time.

The set contained additional extras which included documentaries, a CD soundtrack, exclusive power sword toy, and commemorative booklet. All of this came packaged in a 3D printed Castle Grayskull package.

This was followed by yet another budget friendly collection, which once again featured twenty episodes.

2012 saw the twenty-fifth anniversary of She-Ra, Princess of Power, and to commemorate this, there was another release of the series on DVD. This time it was in a shiny cardboard booklet style package, with She-Ra printed on a clear background slipcover to fit over it.

An often forgotten, or missed, DVD release, was the 2015 Retro TV Toons, which featured ten episodes from the original series. While there's no new content here, it is a unique one for collectors looking to obtain all the home video releases.

The holiday special was re-released on DVD in 2018 with an all new cover. In addition to the artwork, this release did away with the original cardboard style packaging, in lieu of the traditional black plastic DVD case with artwork slipped inside the clear plastic holder.

Both He-Man and She-Ra have been released in their entirety on single DVD sets as of 2019, and these remain in print as of this writing.

A chase variant, of sorts, was released for the He-Man set, which featured a glow in the dark cover. While once readily available, this version is getting more and more scarce as time goes on.

Regardless of the version you want to hunt down, most of them are fairly easy on the bank account. There are some exceptions, such as the noted out of print New Adventures of He-Man, and Best Buy Exclusive 2002 slipcover. However, for the most part, you can get the remaining sets for around ten to thirty dollars each.

Birthday Countdown CD Extraviganza, Day 6!

With the ol' birthday swinging back around...again...already...I decided to celebrate the month right by counting down the days with a new (used) CD a day. It's like an advent calendar, but tweaked specifically for me, by me, from me!

Day 6

Ziggy Marley and the Melody Maker's 1988 Conscious Party, has spent a long time on my want list for the album's title track. It's always been a really cheap CD, which added to the reason I always passed on it. With several sellers having minimum buying limits on Discogs, I had to wait for someone who had multiple albums I wanted to meet the criteria to make a purchase. That finally happened, and I can cross this one off the list.

Day 5

The Bee Gees had a rough time staying relevant in the 80's, despite continuing to deliver solid tracks. It got so bad that during an interview, a frustrated Barry Gibb looked at the camera, and asked, "Can we please exist in the 80's?" While E.S.P. doesn't include my favorite track from the band in this particular decade, it does deliver on the massively popular, You Win Again, a tune which came to Barry in a dream.

Day 4

Crosby, Stills, and Nash, have never been my favorite group. I'm not big into the hippy movement, and their style of music, in general, has never been my thing. However, there was one track off of their 1982 released, Daylight Again, which found me tapping my toes. At a couple bucks, it was easy to grab the album. I mean, I essentially got an entire CD for less than what it would have cost me digitally. Physical media for the win every time!

Day 3

Sergio Mendes has released a ton of albums, releasing them from 1961 through 2020. For so many albums, it's funny in a way that there is only one song I know from him, 1983's Never Gonna Let You Go. It's an iconic staple of the 80's, yet it's remained out of my collection up until now.

Day 2

Quarterflash hit the early 80's hard, then disappeared after three albums in 1985. Take Another Picture is the band's second album, released in 1983. The only track to chart was, Take Me to Heart, which is coincidentally the song that I wanted from it. Much like yesterday's Fixx album, what kept me in a holding pattern on this one for the longest time was its price, especially considering I was only interested in one song. Hopefully, that changes after I fire it up.

Day 1

The Fixx's 1982 album, Shuttered Room features quite a few tracks on that I'm keen on adding to my shuffle list. It's one I've wanted for a while, but shied away from because while it wasn't bank breaking, it was more than I really wanted to pay for a used CD. It's not common in the US, and this one ended up coming from our neighbors to the North.

Retro Spins: Scorpions - Love At First Sting

Let's make August a heavy metal kind of month. One that thrashes with sick guitar licks, thumping drums and punchy bass. Let's also start it off with Scorpions.

You definitely get all of the above with their 1984 album, Love At First Sting. Aided by a successful live performance on MTV a few years prior, it was the record which cemented their international fame in the United States. Of course, it didn't hurt that it included smash hits, Rock You Like A Hurricane, Big City Nights and Still Loving You.

Coincidentally, these are the only stand out tracks to be found. Mind you, there's nothing necessarily "bad" here. They're just not anything as impactful as these three. They set the bar pretty high for the remainder of the album.

Despite their popularity, longevity and impact on the 80's, believe it or not, none of them ever broke into the top ten. Rock You Like A Hurricane peaked at number twenty-five, Still Loving You debuted and disappeared the following week at eighty-six and Big City Nights didn't chart at all. This was unexpected news when I dug into the history of the album.

Over the years, the band has come into a lot of controversy over their choice of album covers. While there was none more worse than their original for 1976's Virgin Killer - A cover anyone with any sense of moral compass would find vile and disgusting, the original cover for Love At First Sting continued this trend of backlash. It's because of this that you can find two versions of the album. The original as depicted here and the alternate "clean" version, which is a picture of the band walking towards the camera against a blank background.

Album covers aside, if you're looking for the three powerhouse tracks noted above, this is definitely the place to find them. You'll get a solid album overall, but as I said, these ones definitely stand out among the rest.
