Retro Spins: Thomas Dolby - The Golden Age Of Wireless

Considered one of the pioneers of new wave, Thomas Dolby was catapulted into fame with his song She Blinded Me With Science. However, interestingly enough, the album which would eventually contain this massive 80's staple didn't initially include it.

The Golden Age Of Wireless was first released in the UK in March 1982, and featured the following track listing:

A1 Flying North
A2 Commercial Breakup
A3 Weightless
A4 Europa And The Pirate Twins
A5 Windpower

B1 The Wreck Of The Fairchild
B2 Airwaves
B3 Radio Silence
B4 Cloudburst And Shingle Street

When it was released in the USA in July of that same year, The Wreck Of The Fairchild was removed, and tracks Urges and Leipzig were added, making it a ten track album.

In October of 1982, Dolby released the EP, Blinded By Science. It was on this record where the track, She Blinded Me With Science can first be found. With the song and singers popularity soaring, The Golden Age Of Wireless was re-released in 1983 leading the album with the hit song.

However, here's where it gets all the more messy. The initial re-release of the album featured an extended version of the song, with a run time of five minutes, nine seconds, as originally introduced on the above mentioned EP. For the radio edit of the song, which is the version most people are familiar with, you would need to look to the 1984 re-re-release of the album.

I gave The Golden Age Of Wireless a play through, obviously, or we wouldn't all be here reading this. While I appreciate the album for what it is, a glimpse into the upcoming world of new wave, admittedly, I am not a Thomas Dolby fan. Truth be told, I don't even like She Blinded Me With Science. However, what drew me to this record was its connection to the era. There's no denying his hit song had a lasting impact. It's because of this, I wanted to ensure it was a part of my 80's collection. Funny how we insist on collecting things we don't necessarily want, simply for the sake of feeling things are "complete".
