Homemade Hungarian Pork Paprikash with Galuska

Looking for a hearty meal that will stick to your ribs? Something after working all day long, or on a bitter cold evening? Man, Hungarian pork paprikash and galuska, also known as SpƤtzle, will certainly fill that need.

I've been eating galuska since I was a young child. My mom would make it frequently as a quick and easy side to accompany many dishes. However, in all my years, I never bothered to really look into where the dish came from, and even today it was more so a happy coincident to make it and discover that it was indeed a Hungarian dish.

Well, today it's recipe time at The Toy Box, and I'm going to show you how to make a unique meal that is full of flavor, heartiness and will give you that warm tummy feeling.

First and foremost, let's get that pork going. Unlike many of my recipes I've shown you, you won't need to marinade this one, so you don't have to start a full day in advance. However, you are going to need at least two and a half hours. You're also going to need between three and four pounds of pork chops. Thin cut, thick cut, bone in, bone out, it doesn't matter. You just want to make sure that whatever you buy can fit into a large skillet with a lid.

Ingredients

3 - 4 Pounds Pork Chops
1/2 Cup Flour
Salt and Pepper (to taste)
1/2 Cup Sour Cream
1/2 Cup Heavy Whipping Cream
1/4 Cup Dry Sherry
1/4 Cup Ketchup
1/4 Teaspoon Paprika
1 Teaspoon Worcestershire Sauce
1 Bay Leaf

In a large bag, combine your flour and salt / pepper. For me, I use one part salt to two parts pepper, and this equates to about 1 teaspoon of salt and 2 teaspoons pepper, but again, season to taste. Once they're all in the bag, seal it, and give it a good shake to incorporate it.

One at a time, add your pork chops and give it a good shake. You want to ensure each chop is fully coated before adding another.

In a large skillet, remember, with a lid, add just enough oil to lightly coat the bottom of the pan. I use olive oil personally. Let this heat up over medium high heat, and when hot, add your pork.

Lower your temp to medium, and cook each chop for about five to seven minutes on each side. You're not looking to cook them fully, only get a nice golden brown on each side.

While your pork is getting happy in the pan, take a large measuring cup and combine the sour cream, heavy whipping cream, sherry, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce and paprika. Give it a good stirring to mix it all up.

Once they're done browning, remove them from the pan. Now you can certainly leave that oil and drippings in the pan, and I suppose there's something to be said about the flavor it may add. However, for me, I give my pan a quick cleaning.

I then reduce the heat to low, and return the pan to the stove, adding the sauce mixture to it, which I place one bay leaf on top.

Add the pork chops back to the pan, giving them flip a couple times to coat them in the sauce. Then place a lid on the pan and let it go for two hours.

You do want to check this periodically to ensure that your pan maintains its liquid, and things don't burn. Don't remove the lid, just give it a swirl to see that everything is okay. If it's not, you unfortunately need to make more sauce, and ensure your burner isn't up too high. However, if you follow this, things should go well for you.

After letting this simmer for two hours, it's time to make the galuska. This recipe is so simple.

Ingredients

2 Cups Flour
1 1/2 Teaspoons Salt
4 Eggs
1/2 Cup Heavy Whipping Cream

Before you even start mixing anything, start yourself a hot pot of water, seasoned with salt, to boil. You will need a fairly large one to allow your galuska to move and breath.

In a large bowl, measure out your flour and salt, and in the middle of it create a well by pushing things to the side. Add your eggs and cream, and stir everything together. I use a wooden spoon for this, but you could use your hands if you want to get down and dirty with it. You could probably even use a mixer with a paddle on low speed if you really wanted to go for the minimal effort effect.

You're not looking for glue consistency, but you're also not looking for kneed-able dough. Somewhere in the middle, and kind of chunky.

Now, there are plenty of ways to do this next step, and none of them are wrong. The bottom line here is get dough to boiling water. If you have the money and love cooking gadgets, you can buy yourself a spatzel maker. This is essentially a metal well on top of a hand grater. Alternatively, you could push the dough through a colander with large slots. My mom would use two spoons that she would grab a bit out with one, and scrape off into the water with another. As for me, I'm using a piping bag (or a Ziplock bag works too).

Whatever your preference, get the dough in pieces into your boiling water. As I squeeze my bag, I'm pinching off one inch sections. Thickness doesn't matter either. Galuska is typically thicker than spatzel, but since it all comes from the same dough, it ultimately tastes the same.

Just let it boil for three to five minutes, giving it an occasional stir. It will tell you when it's done by rising to the top. I let all of mine rise to be sure.

Simply remove them from the water, and give them a good shake.

This is a versatile side dish that can be mixed with any number of herbs, sauces or both. As for me, I'm dicing a medium onion, and throwing this in the pot with 1/2 a stick of butter.

After letting the onions brown up a bit, I add some pepper, and toss this all with the galuska to thoroughly coat it. Then I let is sit on the heat a moment longer to give the galuska themself a little browning.

The pork is all ready to go too, and I like to serve it over a pile of galuska. Alternatively, you can shred the pork and mix it all up in that sauce to make a Hungarian meat sauce of sorts. You could also add a slurry and thicken it up a bit. It's very versatile.

And also incredibly hot...

...But, also delicious. If you're hungry after this meal, see a doctor. I was stuffed half way though my plate.

G.I. Joe Classified - Current Roster

Since 2020, fans, such as my self, have shared a love / hate relationship with Hasbro's G.I. Joe Classified line. Follwing its inception and announcement, hype has been high, with supply being dismally low. Not since the height of Hasbro's secondary most popular line, Star Wars, has the meme, "Ebay Exclusives" been thrown around so readily.

Despite this though, fans haven't stopped lining up in droves to be among the first to obtain each and every figure as it comes out, and today, I'm taking a look at just where we are with this line, in terms of all the assortments which have been made available.

Everything kicked off in early 2020 with the deluxe Snake Eyes pack, available exclusively at Hasbro Pulse.

Shortly thereafter, Hasbro's choice shills toy sites were gifted with press kits, which featured the first wave of figures in its entirety. Later press kits have also been confirmed, which contained a sixth figure, Cobra Commander.

The first wave of figures purportedly started hitting store shelves in June of 2020. Though, your casual collector wouldn't typically find these at any of their local retail outlets. However, for the most part, fans could still pre-order these readily from sites such as Entertainment Earth and Big Bad Toy Store.

By August of 2020, keen eyed collectors started reporting of a variant Destro figure. While it appeared the first run releases had an odd circle engraved in the head, a second production run removed this eyesore.

Wave two, which also started showing up online in June of 2020, included figures six, seven and eight. While these were initially slated as shipping in July, many collector's didn't start getting their hands on them until September / October.

If you believe the rumors, the Regal variant of Cobra Commander, which was a Hasbro Pulse exclusive, was a figure the company released to appease fans who were unhappy when seeing the darker blue outfit he ultimately ended up with for the retail release versus prototype figures for the character that showcased him in a more cartoon accurate light blue outfit.

Despite its mid-2020 pre-order period, the figure didn't officially release from Hasbro until January 2021.

Though I'm keeping the figures in numeric order, these two below are the remaining ones from wave two.

Initially intended as a San Diego Comic Con exclusive in 2020, Snake Supreme Cobra Commander was shifted to be the first G.I. Joe Classified series to be available during the newly conceived virtual Hasbro Pulsecon. For many sitting in isolation during the pandemic, this was a period of relief to finally feel like part of a world that was still functioning.

The convention was held on September 23rd, 2020, and pre-orders for the figure went up immediately thereafter. What's interesting to note is that pre-orders stated the figure would come out in April of 2021. However, I personally received mine on September 28th, 2020, just days after ordering. I then received two more as gifts in April of 2021 from friends / family who ordered at the same time. The only difference was I paid with Paypal, while they paid with credit cards. I was also a Hasbro Pulse member.

Nothing has made fans more angry than the debacle that was the first wave of Target exclusive Cobra Island figures. Not only did Target themselves screw up the street date, causing some stores to sell out long before many fans even knew they were out, but others went the complete opposite way, and refused to sell them until the originally identified street date. What ensued was chaos among collectors, angry outbursts online, and hatred towards any future Target exclusives.

Though these figures were released a year ago (in August of 2020), they are just now becoming more and more available via the store's online site.

As if to add insult to injury, by September of 2020, those collectors who could get their hands on these figures began to notice a pair of variants for two of the characters.

Beach Head was found in both a blue and brown eye variant, while the even more difficult to find Cobra Trooper was found with a black and blue collar variant.

Now not only was it difficult to find these figures, but some of those who already had them now wanted their counterpart variant editions. Prices were already skyrocketing on this particular wave, and the discovery of variants only served to shoot them up even further, as second hand dealers insisted the version they had was the rarer of the two available.

Despite being announced with the Target exclusive wave, Baroness with C.O.I.L. would remain elusive for a few more months. When it finally started trickling out, the majority of product seemed to be headed straight to ebay. To this day, it remains the most difficult figure for fans to obtain at a reasonable price on secondary markets, let alone directly from Target at retail.

Though it wouldn't come out for several more months to come, Hasbro held a live stream on June 26th, 2020, announcing the upcoming Amazon exclusive Arctic Mission Storm Shadow. Shortly after the video, the figure was made available for pre-order, selling out within minutes, a common trend that to this day has continued with the line. The figure began shipping in August that same year.

Shortly after the announcement for Storm Shadow, a Twitter user broke the news of an upcoming Destro figure, aptly titled Pimp Daddy Destro among fans for his outlandish look. Not only did Jordamus_Prime leak the announcement of the figure, but he also posted photos of it, as well as the above noted second wave Cobra Commander, Gung-Ho and Red Ninja. At the time he broke the news, none of the photos for wave two had been seen before.

Profit Director Destro, as he was ultimately called, started shipping in October 2020.

Hasbro Pulse Fest, an all new virtual event, kicked off on April 9th, 2021, and with it came the announcement of the all new wave of figures based on the upcoming / previously delayed Snake Eyes Origins. Much like the prior show, the figures were made available for pre-order shortly thereafter.

Though Snake Eyes, Storm Shadow and Baroness started showing up in collector's hands in June of 2021, Scarlet and Akiko remain slated for December. Though I pre-ordered all five figures at the same time from Hasbro Pulse, I have not received any of them.

During the above noted 2020 Pulsecon, Hasbro both surprised and angered fans by announcing four additional figures that would become available at five o'clock Eastern standard time on June 26th, 2020. Despite the comment section erupting in protest, the company showcased the Cobra Island / Target exclusive Firefly and Cobra Viper, as well as the mass retail release of Zartan and Cobra Infantry - A repainted Cobra Trooper from the above noted first wave of Cobra Island figures.

I was among the few who refreshed and clicked frantically at 5:00 PM when Target finally listed the above two figures for purchase, and was both shocked and ecstatic that I managed to obtain them both. By the time I completed my purchase and refreshed the page, both were sold out.

From there, I returned to Hasbro Pulse, and purchased the below two figures with minimal effort, but which also sold out moments later.

Fire Fly and Cobra Trooper would arrive in January of 2021, while Zartan and Cobra Infantry arrived in February of 2021.

However, between these releases, more unique items started to crop up in the form of repaints. These ones not so subtle as the last, for the most part.

Hasbro announced, repainted, and re-released the entire first wave of Joe members between January and February. Of the four, Snake Eyes is the one figure that has the slightest of changes, removing a red line from his forehead, as seen on the original release, and packaging his knife now in his leg sheath, and not on the side of his head. As for the others, when compared side by side, the differences are obvious. Be it brighter, almost neon colors, or completely different colors, they're hard to miss.

On November 20th, 2020, Hasbro announced that Flint and Lady Jaye would be the next mass released figures, and even offered them up for pre-sale on Pulse. Though they were slated for a May 2021 release, many, myself included, started seeing these pop up in April.

In April of 2021, many ebayers were shocked when seller Galactic Tradeship became the first person to not only confirm the existence of Major Bludd, but have one for sale. Word spread like a wildfire across the internet. Though prices went as high as $10,000.00, many buyers soon cancelled their bids. While the figure still sold for several hundreds of dollars, it was nowhere near the initial price it was garnering.

Shortly thereafter, many other sellers started listing the figure, and as usually the case, it dropped drastically as the secondary markets got flooded. The figure seemed to be "readily available" as of May.

On June 4th, 2021, Hasbro held another virtual announcement panel, and during it revealed the Amazon exclusive Heavy Artillery Road Block (above), Cobra Island Target Exclusive Breaker with RAM Cycle and Barbecue, as well as the mass retail release deluxe Snake Eyes and Timber: Alpha Commandos.

What made this announcement unique was that Hasbro revealed that a limited amount of the figures would be sold directly from their website following the video. Unfortunately, if you weren't right there the moment it was said, you most likely missed out, as the figures all sold out instantly.

While Breaker also sold out immediately at Target's site, Barbecue and the two pack Snake Eyes can still be found for pre-sale via various sites, including Target (in the case of Barbecue).

It's interesting to note that as G.I. Joe Classified has grown more and more popular, many Hong Kong and Taiwan sellers have surfaced as of 2021 claiming to have these items in hand almost immediately after they've been announced. I'm inclined to believe this due to finding a Breaker with RAM Cycle, which I have had in hand since July of 2021, despite its release date of October 3rd, 2021.

As for the below Snake Eyes two pack, people have been starting to get their hands on this as of August 2021. Though it too is not slated for release until October.

Though it has only been teased by Hasbro, many fans are already chomping at the bit for the upcoming Fall 2021 Hasbro Pulsecon, where they will get their first opportunity to purchase this year's exclusive, Master of Disguise Zartan. Much like the above noted Breaker, this figure has also started popping up for sale on ebay as of late July 2021 from overseas sellers.

Led by its color changing abilities, in an homage nod to the original vintage figure, many collector's believe this release will be in high demand, and as a result a pain to get from Pulse. As such, this is justifying their reasoning to pay four to five time more for it now, than what will be its listed "retail" price on Pulse. Don't get me wrong, I too think this will be one of those blink and you miss it figures, but I also think you will be able to get one for less than $250.00. I hope I'm right.

Last up, and the most current to date is an image of the aforementioned Cobra Island Target exclusive Barbecue. This figure is slated for a November 2021 release, and as I mentioned already, is still available for pre-sale directly from Target. Some ebay sellers have started to list it as "in hand" as of early August.

It's interesting to note that for this line being as far along as it is, time wise, it's barely nicked the tip of the iceberg, in terms of characters. In comparison to the vintage series, it's actually right on track with the volume of figures released between 1982 and 1983. So in that regard there's little room to complain. Only excitement to think of what's to come.

Retro Spins: Genesis - From Genesis To Revelation

If you enjoyed last week's history of ever revolving band members that were Fleetwood Mac, then you may also enjoy today's look at the original lineup of Genesis through its final album. Though it's not as massive as that of Mac, it's seen its fare share of iterations before becoming the classic lineup of Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford, and Tony Banks.

Genesis began when God spoke, but as for the band, they began at Charterhouse School in Godalming, Surrey. It was formed by Mike Rutherford, Peter Gabriel, and Anthony Phillips. The name came from pupil Jonathan King, who arranged for them to record their first tracks.

Featuring Peter Gabriel on Vocals, Tony Banks on keyboards, Anthony Phillips on guitar, Mike Rutherford on bass, and John Silver on drums, the band released their 1969 debut, From Genesis To Revelation. However, it's worth noting that Silver was not actually the first drummer for the group. He replaced Chris Stewart just before the album was recorded.

Silver departed after the recording of their debut album to study at Cornell University, and was replaced by John Mayhew for their follow up album, Trespass, released in 1970. Both Anthony Phillips and John Mayhew would exit prior to the recording of 1971's Nursery Crimes, and were replaced by Steve Hackett on guitar, and Phil Collins on drums. Though I was unable to find any information on why Mayhew was dismissed from the group, Phillips departed due to stage fright, and a lack of scope for solos.

The lineup of Gabriel, Hackett, Rutherford, Banks, and Collins would remain in place through 1974's The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway. Following weeks of speculation, Peter Gabriel would leave Genesis in 1975, launching a highly successful solo career. Phil Collins would fill double duties, assuming the role of vocals, while remaining the drummer.

Steve Hackett would leave the group after the 1976, stating he, "needed autonomy". For those of you without a dictionary handy, essentially he wanted independence and freedom to do what he wanted. The result was the aptly titled, "...And Then There Were Three..." album released in 1977. This would feature the most popular lineup of the group, Mike Rutherford, Tony Banks, and Phil Collins.

Though they continued to record in a progressive rock style, things turned commercially successful for Genesis in 1981, when they focused on and released the pop oriented Abacab. This sound, and subsequent success would continue in tandem with Collins own solo success, and Genesis' final album, We Can't Dance in 1991.

However, by 1993, amidst a massive world tour, Collins felt the band couldn't reach any higher than it already had. Rather than continue to try, he opted to step back, focusing on his solo work again. Specifically, to create music which meant more to him personally. He announced his departure from Genesis, releasing his solo album, Both Sides, that same year.

Rutherford and Banks hired Ray Wilson as their vocalist for 1997's Calling All Stations. The album was poorly received, and remains their last studio record to date. Since 2006, Rutherford, Collins, and Banks have reunited for tours, and additional touring scheduled for 2021, while initially postponed, appears to be back on track.

Which leads us to today's Retro Spin, where we go all the way back to 1969 to fire up the debut album of Genesis, From Genesis To Revelation. Right from the start, I pick up on a folksy sound, reminiscent to that of Simon and Garfunkel. I don't necessarily hate it, but I also know this particular style of music doesn't usually resonate with me, in terms of "hit songs".

This initial reaction turned out to be true, as I ultimately didn't walk away with anything new for my shuffle list. From Genesis To Revelation wasn't a bad album. However, what it lacked was any kind of punch. I didn't hear anything that left me wanting to hear it again, and further, I don't even remember any one specific song at all. It was just there. Noise, if you will. Not bad noise, but noise all the same.

With that said, I somewhat expected this. I had tried listening to some of the Gabriel led Genesis stuff in the past, and none of it was really for me. Take that for what it's worth though. My introduction to them was the 80's pop smash hits that dominated the airwaves throughout that decade. I don't remember when I learned that Gabriel was the original front man for the band, but I do recall the shock from hearing it. At the time, I couldn't fathom it. The Sledgehammer guy? Really?

I suppose, just like Fleetwood Mac, sometimes change is necessary to really launch a group from minor success to superstardom. I think this is definitely what happened when Collins took control of Genesis, leading them to a more radio friendly sound, which ultimately resulted in the massive success. For me, Genesis of the 80's is more my speed, but I respect the trials, tribulations, and changes which had to occur to get them to where they are today. For without Gabriel and his folksy sound, there would have never been Collins, Rutherford, Banks, or any of the many hits that have become some of my favorites to this day.

Michael Jackson Time Traveler

Michael Jackson is known for many things. Singing. Dancing. Neverland Ranch, his massive amounts of awards, and more. However, one of the things that many people forget about him was his ability to manipulate space and time to become the first time traveler.

It could be argued that the only reason the gloved one was so popular was due to his ability to return to the past. Rumor has it, he would create music, but then test it on the public. If it failed, he would return to his moment from the past, conduct excessive rewrites, ultimately dwindling down what would be subpar music to masterpieces. It's said that this is how he ultimately created his three most popular albums, which just so happened to be released consecutively, Off The Wall, Thriller, and Bad.

However, pride comes before the fall, and Michael's ego would ultimately become his own downfall.

Upon returning to 1979, Michael casually posed for a selfie utilizing his brand new flip phone. However, unbeknownst to him, a young and up and coming photographer named Michael Salisbury, would snap a picture of The King Of Pop right at this very moment. You can see in the face of the young singer his rage filled eyes from having been found out.

Historians place Michael's original point of time travel as 2002, the year flip phones, as seen in his right hand, were released with cameras for personal photography

It is speculated that Mr. Salisbury may have attempted to flee from Jackson, hiding the film while making his escape. However, the past would resurface in 2001. Epic Records would release a special edition of Off The Wall, and in doing so, use photos from a roll of film which was discovered in an abandoned warehouse.  The photographer's name was scribbled across the canister, as if written while moving at a rapid pace with shaking hands. When questioned about the images, a reluctant Salisbury only stated, "Shamone," an interesting and curious statement indeed.

With his ability to time travel seemingly discovered, police now believe that Michael Jackson may have also had something to do with the sudden disappearance and replacement of Beatles bassist, Paul McCartney, who allegedly died in a 1966 fatal car crash. They speculate that Michael and Paul's relationship came to a head in 1985 upon Jackson purchasing the publishing rights to the former Fab Four's catalog. Rather than go through lengthy legal battles with his once colleague and friend, Michael would instead return to the past, right at the pinnacle of Beatlemania, to dispose of and replace McCartney with a more subservient replica.

The facts surrounding these allegations are intriguing, and it will be interested to see how they play out as more details surface. But, as first President, George Washington was fond of saying, "Don't believe everything you read on the internet."

Retro Spins: Communards - Communards

Communards are one of those rare duos from the 80's that came and went pretty fast. In fact, many people probably don't even know who they were. I myself was included in that group. I came across them in one of those, all to many, "my favorite songs of the 80's" compilation videos on Youtube.

Their only hit, or more accurately stated as mild success, came in the form of the re-recorded Don't Leave Me This Way, which I only knew of because of the 2000 released version by Sheena Easton on her Fabulous album. However, the song was originally made popular by Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes in 1975 and then once again in 1977 by Thelma Houston.

Success would only be a millisecond blip with the duo being out of the limelight just as quickly as they were in it. The song debuted in the final week of December 1986 at number eighty-seven, and peak at number forty-six in February of the following year. However, by March of '87, the track fell off the charts, and they were essentially never heard from again.

One hit wonders? I aimed to find out as I sat down to play their self titled 1986 album. What was it the Communards added to the world of 80's music?

A resounding, "NOTHING!"

Yikes...This was bad. Really bad. I mean, really, really bad. Maybe one of, if not the worst, 80's albums I've heard.

I've heard bad albums before, but this was literally diarrhea in my ears. The falsetto sounds reverberating from singer Jimmy Sommerville felt like they could be used to torture people with. I'm serious. Blindfold them, lock them in a dark room and blare this album throughout the place. They'll be telling you anything you want to know in no time.

I always try to push myself through an entire album for my Retro Spin posts, but I just couldn't do it. By song three I was done. At a minimum I started each song to see if things got better, but as I heard the same yodeling emanating with each song I quickly hit the "next" button. What's worse is this album is over an hour long! Who in their right mind could sit through this?

Yeah, I stand by what I said above. This album is a perfect torture device. Terrible in every way. Run far from anything from the Communards!

Milky The Marvelous Milking Cow (Kenner)

Milky The Marvelous Milking Cow
Kenner
1977

Kenner made some really weird toys in the 1970's. We looked at the nightmarish Hugo last week, and this week I fear things only get stranger.

Meet Milky, the Marvelous Milking Cow.

By pumping her tail, feed Milky real water, and when she's done, she'll raise her head and moo. That's the signal that she''s ready to produce fake milk, which you can extract from her rubber utters. The milk substance, which may or may not have been safe to drink, was produced by putting special tablets insider her utter prior to "feeding" the toy water. The toy was rounded out with a plastic farm mat, a cowbell for her neck, a trough to fill with the water and a booklet on how cows produce milk.

As you can imagine, long term play value definitely doesn't exist with this toy, and interest waned fairly quickly from the public. Despite this, toy aficionados have been known to spend as much as one hundred fifty dollars on a complete in box Milky these days.

Kudos to Kenner for yet another bizarre toy from the past.

2021 Pulsecon Zartan Showing Up On Ebay

Looks like Asian "markets" are putting the upcoming Pulsecon 2021 Zartan on ebay. Of course, it will cost you a ridiculous amount of money to be among the first to own one. Current listings are $250.00+.

The package appears to be a "hinged" flip cover, with a dial incorporated into it. Rotating the circle changes the face of Zartan, essentially mimicking his master of disguise abilities.

It looks cool, but I'll wait for Pulsecon.
