Retro Spins: Jermaine Jackson - Jermaine Jackson (AKA Dynamite)

Jermaine Jackson
Jermaine Jackson
1984

Presumably around the time frame the Jacksons were recording their 1984 Victory, Jermaine was hard at work and consecutively working on his 1984 self titled Jermaine Jackson album. This presumption is due to both of the albums being released mere month's apart.

The self titled album still delivers solid tracks - Some of which turned out to be chart toppers themselves. The first hit came in the form of Dynamite, a hard hitting pop track which debuted in July of 1984 at number fifty-five. Unfortunately the track would only make it to number fifteen before dropping back off the charts. The song was followed by Do What You Do which charted in October which climbed to number thirteen by January 1985 before slipping down and off the charts.

An interesting side note to the album is that the international release was actually entitled, "Dynamite". This version is not only the easier to find on CD, but it's also cheaper and contains the radio edit version of the Pia Zadora duet hit, "When the Rain Begins to Fall". As such, personally speaking, the international version is a little more desirable to own.

It's unfortunate Jermaine never saw the type of solo success he found with his brothers. It's even more so odd the song from the album, Tell Me I'm Not Dreaming, which featured his brother Michael never hit the charts.

Overall the album is pretty good. I ended up grabbing six of the nine tracks; Dynamite, Sweetest Sweetest, Tell Me I'm Not Dreaming, Come to Me (One Way or Another), Do What You Do and Some Things Are Private. Granted these songs are by no mean commercial air play songs. They're enjoyable, but not necessarily catchy (if you know what I mean). It's by no means in the category of Michael Jackson's Thriller, but then again, was it supposed to be?

Mega Heroes: Judge Dredd (Mattel)

Mega Heroes: Judge Dredd
Mattel
1995

Though I've read minimal issues of Judge Dredd and wasn't particularly a fan of the original or remake movies I still feel oddly drawn towards the character. He's just so cool.

The irony of Dredd, is while the character has been around since 1977 when he was created by writer John Wagner and artist Carlos Ezquerra, there's honestly not that much merchandise out there for him. Toys are rather slim pickins'.

Mattel released the Mega Heroes: Judge Dredd line in 1995 to coincide with the Sylvester Stallone film. However, in doing so, they made the two inch figurines more so representative of the comic book version. As such, it's not really a tie in product. More so a stand alone one.

Judge Vs. Uglies Pack #3

The downside of course to these being such small "figures" is that the pose they are sculpted in is the pose you're stuck with. They can also be a challenge to display because in the wrong spot they can go relatively unnoticed (out of the package). I do have to say, the best way for displaying figures like this is how I found them in one person's collection. He had taken them all out of the packages and tucked them inside a Judge Dredd pinball game. Not a bad idea - If they don't fall over or encumber the gameplay.

Judge Vs. Machine Pack #6

Of course, if bigger is your thing, Mattel also produced a twelve inch Judge Dredd statue for the line. Much like the figures, and obviously because it is a statue, it too is limited to the pose in which it is sculpted in.

Judge Dredd Statue

If Mattel was only producing figurines and status, where does one get an actual Judge Dredd figure? I'm glad you asked! Look to the 1999 2000 AD line to fill that void for you. However, if the figurines appeal to you, rest assured you can find them very, very cheap. They can sell for as little as $2.00 a piece, mint on card. It's the twelve inch statue which is going to hurt. It's typically priced at $200.00, but usually sells for around $150.00.

Retro Spins: Eddie Murphy - How Could It Be

Eddie Murphy
How Could It Be
1985

Actor, comedian, musician, Eddie Murphy seems to have dabbled in a little bit of everything. Of course, many people don't tend to remember him for his singing career.

His 1985 album, How Could It Be is one hit wonder and scarce CD all in one. It is of course notable for the track, "Party All the Time" which made it big in 1985. The song debuted in October of 1985 in the number eighty-two spot where it flew up to number two by December and stayed there for a couple consecutive weeks leading into 1986.

Though the track is an iconic 80's staple, it's interesting to note that not many people know it's Murphy behind the microphone. Oddly, I've heard of some people who think the singer is Rick James - and I can't honestly fathom how. On a good day James wouldn't sound this smooth.

The album seems to transition between styles. It starts out on a pop leg, then switches to a ballad then back to pop. After this, you get a couple gospel  type songs...and I say, "type" because I don't know many songs about God that drop "N" bombs. In fact, I didn't know any until today. But, hey. Maybe I'm just not listening to the right gospel songs.

In my listen, I found three tracks which stood out; Do I, Con Confused and of course, Party All the Time. Beyond that I essentially heard tracks that I otherwise tuned out after a few seconds. Overall, I left with the impression that Murphy should stick to acting...In 80's movies, not that new stuff he did which was cringe worthy.

The album didn't seem to impact him much in his career one way or another. Murphy not only released another singing album in the 80's, but then went on to star in the highly successful The Golden Child, Beverly Hills Cop II, Coming to America and Another 48 Hours (just to name a few). Despite being a one hit wonder (musician wise), he certainly must have done something right (career wise).

Beetle Bailey (Dark Horse Comics)

Beetle Bailey
Dark Horse Comics
2000

I read Beetle Bailey in the Sunday Funnies when I was a kid and my parents had a subscription to that now very obscure thing known as a newspaper. However, I never really put much stock into the stories or cared beyond my visit to the can with the paper under my arm. To me it was just a way to pass the time while passing a...Well, you know where this is going.

As such, I didn't really pay much attention to Dark Horse's 2000 release of action figures with books packs - A decision I have since come to regret.

I have to admit, there is an essence of fun to this minimal line. The figures look spot on to their funny pages counterparts and admittedly I wouldn't mind tossing these books in the bathroom (if you know what I mean). Not only that, but these figures are a beast to track down these days. They're not expensive by any means, just really difficult to find.

 Beetle Bailey

 Sarge

 Miss Buxley

 General Halftrack

If you simply want the figures and don't care about the packaging, you may have better luck tracking down this seven pack which included all four of the above plus three more.

Miss Buxley*Cookie*Lt. Flap

Beetle Baily, and Sunday Funnies in general are one of those things that as an adult I can say I definitely took for granted in my adolescence. I miss those simpler times of being able to pull the multi-page funnies from my parents paper, sprawl it out across the ground of the living room and just disappear into short, sometimes funny, often times over my head clips of comics. Of course, these days if I did that it would take me about an hour to get back up.
