The Three Stooges

The trailer for The Three Stooges Return drops.

Let's see how Lucasfilm screws this one up...

Retro Spins: Scandal - Scandal

Scandal
Scandal
1982

Man, whatever happened to Scandal? They released one EP and one studio album, then disappeared into 80's obscurity. The punched hard in the early 80's with songs such as Goodbye to You and The Warrior and left a lot of people wanting more...That they never got.

Scandal's first album, the self titled EP, featured the first hit noted above - Goodbye to You. It's interesting to note the album itself was released in a limited run on both vinyl and cassette, but never saw a CD release. As such, fans of the song who missed the initial release were limited to catching it on the radio.

However, this wouldn't have been an easy feat as the song didn't exactly blow audiences away when it was first released. In truth, Goodbye to You only managed to debut at number eighty-six on the charts in 1982 and it disappeared the following week. It did manage to pique some slight interest with the second chart topper, Love's Got A Line on You. By slight interest, I mean it debuted on the charts at number eighty-seven in April of 1983 and much like Goodbye to You, disappeared the following week.

It wouldn't be until 1984 that the band would finally find success with the top ten song, The Warrior from their album, Warrior (not The Warrior, just Warrior - Unlike the song). Stop there though. I'm not hear to talk about that album. Not today. Instead, I want to stay focused on their EP.

The album's not bad, but in all honesty, the only stand out track is Goodbye to You. Now, I'm not saying the remaining four tracks are bad, not by any means. They're just not catchy. The key to a good song is etched in getting stuck in someone's head. As I finished the album and jumped into another I can't honestly say I remember any of the other tracks from the EP. Mind you, that's not from failure to listen. They were just there. Noise if you will. Good noise, but noise nonetheless.

Fortunately these days, tracking down the album isn't limited to just vinyl and cassette. While it was never "officially" released on CD as the EP, all five tracks were released on the 2006 compilation album, We Are the 80's: Scandal. The CD also contained the B side to the singe Goodbye to You, All My Life. The CD also contains half of the tracks from Warrior, but you can still buy this particular album on CD - So no need to settle for half of them.

A fun fact about the band - Singer / Songwriter Jon Bon Jovi himself was the guitarist in the group for a very brief period in 1983. Guess he wasn't to sure his, or rather, the band's first studio album, the self titled Bon Jovi, would be a success. Hey, always good to have a backup plan.

This Is Spinal Tap (Sideshow Toy)

This Is Spinal Tap
Sideshow Toy
2000

Musicians David St. Hubbins, Nigel Tufnel and Derek Smalls make up the band, Spinal Tap!...Or, better stated, actors, Michael McKean, Christopher Guest and Harry Shearer make up the fictional band, Spinal Tap!

My introduction to the band was actually in 1991 when they took the stage at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert to entice the crowd with their song, Majesty of Rock. Loved it and immediately tracked down the album, Break Like the Wind which it's featured on - The only album of theirs I have...Well, until I wrote that sentence and immediately went to ebay to buy, "This is Spinal Tap". What can I say, I'm a sucker for impulse buying.

For the longest time, and much like The Monkees, I thought the band was legit. It never even crossed my mind they were a fictional band created as a parody and then grew into something larger - Or a legit band, if you will. Granted, Spinal Tap by no means saw the popularity The Monkees experienced.

If you haven't actually seen the movie, "This is Spinal Tap", I highly recommend you do. While its script is rather generic, it has a ton of hysterical moments. My personal favorite being when the band is setting up / rehearsing for a show and they're shown the cover for their fictional album, "Smell the Glove", for the first time. All black. No label, no songs, no picture. Just black. Ridiculous in a way because both Prince and Metallica would go forward and do the same thing with future albums. Spinal Tap can shout, "FIRST!" as this would also become the cover for the film's soundtrack / first studio album.

Of course back in 1984 when the film was produced there was no market for action figures, nor any toy producers who would have probably even considered making figures based on the characters. That's kind of why it's such a great time in action figures and has been for the past two decades. Cult classic characters have seen an abundance of releases thanks to companies such as NECA, McFarlane Toys, Mezco and of course Sideshow Toy who released these particular figures.

Each twelve inch figure comes with the character's signature guitar as well as a really nice display stand shaped like a guitar pick which features the character's name. Additionally, each figure also comes with a cardboard Spinal Tap album cover and record. Nigel features the album Shark Sandwich, David comes with Intravenus de Milo and Derek comes with a promotional album which states it's not for sale. There are also a handful of other accessories included, such as a cucumber (Derek), amp volume dial (Nigel) and sketches / drawings (David). If you watch the movie, you'll quickly discover all of these accessories make sense.

If you're in to the all in one purchasing option, Sideshow Toy produced a three pack which is actually really nice. It looks like a guitar (or keyboard) case and features a fantastic window box view of the band.

The great thing about these figures is that if you missed them in 2000 when they were first released, they're not going to break your bank. I've seen the three pack, never opened, sell for as little as $8.50. Individual figures have sold for as little as ninety-nine cents. Of course, nabbing them at these low prices is going to take a bit of patience as several sellers list them rather high and I've seen them sell for $60.00 to $150.00 too. The best thing to do is arm yourself with information on the line. You don't have to pay high prices to get them, so don't.

Retro Spins: Taco - After Eight

Taco
After Eight
1982

I really had to brace myself for this one because when I first tried to sit through this album I had to cut it off midway through the first track. I wasn't too prepared for what I was in for and it wasn't working for me. After a little research on the album and mental preparedness I took deep breaths and dove in.

First, it's important to understand the album. Taco's intentions were to take classic theatrical and Broadway hits of yesterday and develop them for the 80's pop scene. He certainly did just that and while the album hits these marks it fails to really attract attention for being anything original. Most of us have heard these songs before Taco's renderings, so we've already made a determination if we like them or not.

Taco fits the bill behind these songs. He sounds straight out of the era these songs came from (vocally) and quite honestly some of these tracks would fit well in an environment such as 2K's Bioshock or even Sega's Condemned: Criminal Origins. Unfortunately, when you're faced with just listening to the album it's not so good. Perhaps I would enjoy these tracks more if I had a greater appreciation for Broadway, but I don't.

On a side note, I love how the cover even suggests the concept of, "This guy isn't going to fit in here." Taco knew he was about to present something very different to the world and though it wasn't necessarily my favorite album, kudos to him for doing what he loves and finding a niche audience in the process. That was part of the beauty of the 80's. Everyone could do (pretty much) their own thing and nobody (or at least most didn't) judged too harshly.

I personally bought the album for the hit, "Puttin' on the Ritz" which is the only song from Taco most people even remotely remember. The song was by no means an instant success. It took almost a full year for it to debut on the charts. However, once it did it moved fairly quickly towards the top and eventually peaked at number four for two consecutive weeks in September of 1983. Unfortunately, it quickly dropped off from there and became the only hit for Taco.

After listening to the album I think it's safe to say I can (sparsely) stick with that one and only track for my 80's listening shuffle. I didn't necessarily cringe like I did with my first attempt at listening to it, but I didn't come away with anything else either. It's just not my cup of tea.

If it's yours, then you're definitely going to want to grab this one sooner than later. It's becoming more and more scarce on CD and prices are rising rapidly.

Star Wars: A New Hope Widevision (Topps)

Star Wars: A New Hope Widevision
Topps
1995

Does anyone remember the good old days where one full box of thirty six packs guaranteed a full set of cards (sometimes two) as well as (at least) one full set of stickers? What happened to those days?

Despite numerous attempts, I've never been a big fan of trading cards. Though it was fun to get a wax pack here and there in the 80's and early 90's, something changed drastically in the industry when companies such as Topps and....Are there any others these days?....Started packing in any and every chase card they could think of; chromium holofoils, stickers, puzzles, bonus packs with exclusive cards.

When that became common practice, they then started tossing in things such as autographs, sketch cards, pieces of jerseys or actor's clothing, medals, and even the printing plates themselves. Even collecting a base set became a chore because card packs were inundated with multiple parallel borders of various rarities. Collecting cards became work. Worst of all it was expensive and pretty much guaranteed to ruin the day of any type of completest.

One of the last trading card sets I collected in my teenage years was the Widevision Topps Star Wars cards. What drew me into this set was it was essentially film cells on trading cards - Something which appealed greatly to me as someone who collects every version of Star Wars on home video. What was equally appealing was that on the back of the cards  was the script, scene for scene along with storyboards and behind the scene's photos.

Like any trading card series of the 1990's, the set began as limited promo cards which were distributed to card and comic book retailers. Though they were the same front images (sans the coming soon blurb) which would eventually make their way into the set, they were distinguishable by their unique numbering, which began with a "P", as well as the card back advertisement for the set.

 Promo Cards

 Promo Cards

The base set consisted of 120 cards, beginning and ending with fantastic paintings from the films promotional material. In between was essentially a visual storytelling of the film from card to card in chronological order.

Of course you can't have any type of trading card without a chase set. This sub series consisted of ten chromium cards depicting some of Ralph McQuarrie's artwork.

 Chrome Chase Cards

 Chrome Chase Cards

For the added chase, Topps produced four cards which were packed in with Kenner's 1995 Kenner Classic 4-Pack of figures. For those of you who were big into the resurgence of Star Wars figures, starting with the Power of the Force II line, you may remember this set. At the very least you'll recognize the packaging style.

The four cards included in this set were no different from those in the standard base set. The only exception being these cards were numbered with a "K" prefix.

Kenner Classic 4-Pack Bonus Cards

It's a bit of a challenge to hunt down the chromium chase cards from this set nowadays. However, the base set, promos and even the Kenner Classic 4-Pack bonus cards are quite common.
