Comics Corner: Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man 87

Title: Peter Parker, The Spectcular Spider-Man
Issue Number: 87
Release Date: February 1984

Highlights

  • Spider-Man takes Black Cat to his Chelsea apartment, and upon first glance, she's not impressed
  • Spider-Man explains that being him didn't make him rich, and Felicia wants to know why
  • Spider-Man tells Black Cat his origin, takes his mask off in the process
  • Black Cat freaks out, and tells him to put his mask back on
  • Black Cat tells Spider-Man that she loves him, basically saying that she doesn't want to be with Peter Parker
  • Reference is made to The Amazing Spider-Man 249
  • Spider-Man is upset that he trusted Black Cat with his secret, only to be rejected
  • Spider-Man starts to reconsider, maybe Spider-Man is who he'd rather be, which is why Peter Parker dropped out of school
  • Spider-Man relents to the fact that Black Cat doesn't want to be with Peter Parker, and decides to go with it
Low Points
  • The continuity of Spider-Man is off
    • The events of this issue take place right after Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man 86
    • Chronologically, it's noted that after issue 86 of Peter Parker The Spectacular Spider-Man that one should read The Amazing Spider-Man 249, 250, 251, and Marvel Team-Up 138 before reading Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man 87
    • The Amazing Spider-Man 249 is a three issue story arc, continuing in issue 250, and concluding in issue 251 where Spider-Man mysteriously vanishes, with each issue picking up immediately where the other left off
    • There's no way the events of Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man 87 could have happened after issue 251
    • Further, there's no way the events of Marvel Team-Up 138 could have occurred after 251 either
  • I'm not a fan of Spider-Man throwing Peter Parker away just for some tail
  • No major villain appearances, just some random thugs to give Spider-Man and Black Cat easy targets to beat up as a team
Oddities
  • Editor's Day Off: Those classic eye lenses colored red in several panels

  • Corruption and lies - A plan is motion to take all the vibranium from Wakanda, but one which ends on a cliffhanger

Comics Corner: The Amazing Spider-Man 87

Title: The Amazing Spider-Man
Issue Number: 87
Release Date: August 1970

Highlights

  • In a sickness induced daze, Peter tells all of his friends (Gwen, Mary Jane and Harry) that he's Spider-Man
Low Points
  • Peter Parker gets a flu virus and once again becomes useless, thinking he's losing his powers - This is what, the third time Marvel has written this kind of story for Spider-Man?
  • Spider-Man breaks into a jewelry shop in the middle of the night to steal a gift for Gwen - He ends up not going through with it, but still broke in, busted into the safe and picked it up before changing his mind - Way out of character
Oddities
  • Why do cold and flu viruses make Spider-Man so useless? He can lift cars, but can't take a sniffle?
  • Peter has Hobie Brown (AKA The Prowler) dress up in his Spider-Man suit and asks him to show up at Gwen Stacy's home to solve his problem of revealing his identity of Spider-Man, and nobody so much as bats an eye at his sudden "urban" voice
  • Why is Hobie so dumb that he can't put two and two together that if Spider-Man is asking him to come to Gwen's house to tell them how great Peter Parker is that clearly there's a dead giveaway about his secret identity?
