Comics Corner: Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man 109

Highlights

  • The story takes place immediately after the events of the last issue, and the story are takes place at some point between the events that unfold in Web Of Spider-Man 11
  • First appearance of Santa Claus Burglar, Gerald Jablonski, and Susie Jablonski
  • Death of Hugo Kelsey
  • We learn that one of the bystanders shot during the battle between Spider-Man and Sin-Eater in the last issue was Hugo Kelsey, and that he died from that wound
  • The threads of a new story begin to weave as Santa Claus Burglar convinces a little girl to open the window to her room
  • Marla Jameson invites Betty Brant to come stay at the house with her while both their husbands are away on business
  • Spider-Man sneaks into Kingpin's headquarters to question him about Sin-Eater, but learns he was neither successful in sneaking up on him, nor that Kingpin has any information
  • He does, however, learn that Daredevil lefts moments ago after asking for the same information
  • Matt Murdock heads to Josie's Bar looking for information on Sin-Eater, but instead finds a fight
  • After beating up the thugs, he leaves peacefully with Josie commenting on her happiness that nobody broke the window, just as Spider-Man crashes through it
  • Spider-Man grabs Gerald Jablonski, and pumps him for information, but gets nothing
  • Sin-Eater arrives at the Bugle looking for Jonah, and Robbie poses as him to save Marla who the villain has taken hostage
  • Peter knocks out Sin-Eater with a part from a type writer, and unmasks him, revealing Emil Gregg
  • Emil is questioned at the station, and seems almost confused by his actions, stating it's the voices that tell him what to do
  • Daredevil arrives during questioning, and after pulling Spider-Man aside informs him that Emil is not the real Sin-Eater, but rather a copycat
  • Spider-Man and Daredevil go to Emil's apartment to search for clues
  • While there, Daredevil informs Spider-Man that he didn't like his tactic taken with Gerald, putting his life in danger, and forcing him to turn states evidence for fear he'd be killed by his fellow criminals
  • Daredevil finds that the door connecting to the neighboring apartment has been jimmied, and the two enter to find themselves in Detective Stanley Carter's apartment
  • Inside, they find the costume of Sin-Eater, his gun, and quickly put two and two together - Carter is Sin-Eater
  • The two deduce that Sin-Eater will go to J. Jonah Jameson's house to finish his kill, which he does
  • As Spider-Man phones the house, and Betty answers, Sin-Earter arrives, and opens fire

Highlights

  • Reference is made to The Defenders 4, 94, 95, 100, 105, 107, Mighty Thor 296, 311, Marvel Team-Up 112, and "current issues of Doctor Strange"
  • Valkyrie and Enchantress begin a battle to the death
  • The soul of Enchantress gets sucked into the Globe of Souls
  • Hellcat doesn't think she likes the real Valkyrie versus when Barbara Norris inhabited her body
  • Valkyrie confronts Odin, demanding answers for why he stripped her of her godly powers, and never came looking for her when she disappeared
  • Hulk, Namor, and Son of Satan are transported somewhere that concerns them greatly in a cliffhanging interlude
  • Doctor Strange departs on his own to go find them
  • Gargoyle and Spider-Man head off together, and a blurb tells you to catch up with them in Marvel Team-Up 119
  • Dolly convinces Hellcat to go out on her own and look for her dad
  • Nighthawk returns from the dead, and in an all new costume
  • It's not going to get me reading The Defenders, but there's a lot that happened in this story that I can see would excite fans of the series
Low Points
  • The text, in all its Asgardian manner, is difficult to read

  • Reference is made to an issue 206, but not specifically in what title
