Retro Spins: The Psychedelic Furs - Forever Now

Still hopefully that I'll find a hidden gem in the Fur's discography, today I jump into their 1982 released Forever Now.

The band reduced from six member to four with the departure of Roger Morris and Duncan Kilburn. Drummer Vince Ely also seemed uncommitted to the band, leaving the remaining three members to relatively write all the new songs themselves.

With their previous producer unavailable, the band decided that it may be time to try new things and sought out someone new. At first, Columbia attempted to enlist David Bowie. Unfortunately, his commitments meant the band would have to wait a long time. As such, they instead turned to Todd Rundgren.

Rundgren fused the Fur's post-punk aesthetic with his own power pop style, pushing the band to work outside of their comfort zone. This was not only for the music itself, but in the way they typically wrote. While the guys came to the studio with a handful of demos, the producer told them he expected a full album of songs to be ready and sent them off to write. This was contrary to the band's style of letting creative juices flow during studio sessions.

All worked out for the best, as Forever Now would be the band's first gold certified record. Further, it would produce their first Billboard Hot 100 hit, Love My Way, peaking at number forty-four. Though considered a minor hit at the time, the tune has since gone on to be featured in a multitude of movies and video games.

Now we're talking! playing through Forever Now, I'm finally getting that pop punk sound that I was expecting from the Psychedelic Furs.

Though not perfect from front to back, it was a solid 50 / 50 split. Of the ten tracks, I was all in on Love My Way, Goodbye, President Gas, Run And Run, and Danger.

Finally, I'm at the point where I not only really dig what I'm hearing, but I'm excited to hear more. Which is great since I have three more albums to get through.

To promote of the album, the Furs embarked on a world tour. However, it would be without drummer Ely, who departed shortly after recording of Forever Now was completed. Phill Calvert of the Birthday Party would fill in for the shows but not join as a member.

In further support of the album, the band released three music videos, Love My Way, Run And Run, and Sleep Comes Down. All of these would see steady rotation on MTV, further instilling their presence in the USA.

However, now a trio, the band would take two years before returning to the studio. The break turned out to be a good idea, as their next album, 1984's Mirror Moves, would hit even harder. That's where you'll find me tomorrow.
