I may have painted myself into a corner with yesterday's Retro Spin, which was all about Apollonia 6's one and only album. In that post, I went into considerable detail and history about how that record came to be, and in doing so, really touched on every aspect that would have pertained to this one.
It wasn't my intentions to follow that post up with a review of Vanity 6's self titled album. However, just as I was hitting publish, I figured, why the heck not?
With the history pretty much stated yesterday, let's just jump right into the review.
Much like Apollonia 6, the music style captures the sound of Prince from that particular moment in time. While the aforementioned is heavy on that unique Purple Rain sound, this one leans more towards the album, Controversy.
Vanity 6 is by no means a hit album. It's full of raunchy lyrics, packed into dance synth tunes, and if you allow yourself, you can definitely bop your head up and down to them while tapping your toes.
For me, owning and listening to this album was essentially to check a box. It wasn't on my want list, and there are no songs that I particularly like, or would add to my shuffle list. Instead, much like Apollonia six, its just there for me as an extension of my Prince albums. If not for him, I simply wouldn't care about its existence.
Though short and sweet, the above really sums, and wraps it up. There's no hits here, and nothing worth going back to listen to more than once. Unless you absolutely want to own everything Prince had a hand in, this is skippable in every sense of the word.
