Hanna-Barbera (McFarlane Toys)

Hanna-Barbera, named for the two founders William Hanna and Joseph Barbera (along with George Sidney) was formed in 1957 after Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) shut down its animation department, where the two had worked. The two had already found great success (both solo and as a partnership) in the world of cartoons on such entities as Tom and Jerry, Harman-Ising Happy Harmonies,Captain and the Kids, and Cubby Bear and Rainbow Parades (just to name a few), so it was only natural that they would form their own company when the opportunity presented itself.

Under the newly formed company, the duo went on to find even greater success with shows such as; The Huckleberry Hound Show, The Quick Draw McGraw Show, The Flintstones, The Yogi Bear Show, Top Cat, The Jetsons, Jonny Quest, Space Ghost, Wacky Races, Scooby-Doo, Where Are You?, and The Smurfs (just to name a few). Over the course of their careers, they have won several Oscars and Emmys, and been nominated for countless more awards. Both were even given stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in the 1980's.

In 1991 Turner Broadcasting Company purchased Hanna-Barbera (the company), and used its catalog of shows to launch their new network - Cartoon Network. Under the company name, new shows were created such as; Dexter's Laboratory, Johnny Bravo, Cow and Chicken, I Am Weasel and The Powerpuff Girls, and have gone on to have the iconic status of the companies original shows for a whole new generation of fans.

Sadly the duo are no longer with us. William Hanna passed away at the age of 90 on March 22, 2001 from throat cancer. His partner, Joseph Barbera passed away at age 95 on December 18, 2006 from what was deemed "Natural Causes". The company has since been merged with Time Warner since the loss of these animation geniuses.

Between 2006 and 2007, McFarlane Toys tipped their collective hat(s) to some of the fantastic characters that the duo had stamped their names on by producing a small series of toys entitled Hanna-Barbera. Though only two series were produced, they encompass a vast majority of the careers of William Hanna and Joseph Barbera.

The sculpts capture the look and feel of each character perfectly, including common facial expressions as seen in the shows. Our personal favorite is the Fred Flintstone/Dino two pack from series two. This figure (for lack of a better word) is perfect.

The first series included five figures, and one deluxe figure and vehicle pack. To say the series was "Fred Flintstone and Tom and Jerry Oriented" would be an understatement. McFarlane Toys was definitely using these three characters as the main driving point for the series.

Each figure (with the exception of the deluxe vehicle and figure box set) came packaged in a PVC bubble package with a unique side bar photo and title card. Even different versions of the same characters were given unique packaging such as seen in the two different Tom and Jerry packs that were released. Each figure also came packed with a background piece that doubled as a figure stand.

Series two was slightly larger than the first series, and included seven figures and another deluxe box set. What’s nice about both series one and two are the inclusion of the words "Series 1" and "Series 2" on the packaging to help distinguish them for buyers. This is something that we wish more toy companies would do.

A third series was announced in 2007, and cancelled shortly afterwards. This set would have included some amazing figures such as; Twinkle Toes Fred Flintstone, The Great Grape Ape, Huckleberry Hound, The Jetsons, Secret Squirrel, Snagglepuss, and The Flintstones Boxed Set - Quittin Time. Each figure would have retailed for $14.99, while the box set of the Flintstones would have retailed for $29.99. It's a real shame these figures were never released, though prototypes are known to exist.

For the most part, the figures on the secondary market fetch around retail prices still today, though you can occasionally get a few of them for less. There are a few that go for slightly over $20.00 each, but not many.

This is absolutely a great toy line for cartoon fans, or fans of the individual characters. It's not a series that feels incomplete if you don't buy every single piece, so that can be beneficial to those looking to pick up just their favorites.

Cult Classics Presents: Reservoir Dogs (Neca)

While Reservoir Dogs was Quentin Tarantino's first film, it didn't see the success it has garnered today when it first opened. No, it wasn't until a little film entitled "Pulp Fiction" that people turned an interested eye towards Tarantino. In fact, the majority of people didn't even notice that he had produced a film prior to Pulp Fiction until its success. Since then the man has gone on to produce (what Hollywood considers) hit after hit.

Reservoir Dogs was released in 1992, and started a pretty mainstream cast that has since made appearance after appearance in Tarantino's films (Michael Madsen, Harvey Keitel, Tim Roth, etc.). The story revolves around a jewelry heist gone terribly wrong, leaving the remaining members of the "crew" trying to piece together how the cops were able to respond so quickly. We won't spoil any tidbits beyond that for you folks out there who haven't seen the film. Suffice to say that it's worth a viewing.

Under the guise of their newly developed "Cult Classics" line, Neca produced a small batch of figures from the film in 2007. While you won't find all the characters here the main cast of the film are available.

At a glance it's difficult to tell the figures apart. The sculpting of the faces isn't all that accurate to the actors who played the characters, and the clothing only has subtle changes from figure to figure - Mainly in the jacket and tie. With the exception of Mr. Pink, everyone comes with the same accessories - A pair of shades and a gun. Mr. Pink comes with shades and a bag. Each figure also includes a stand, which while we cannot confirm what it represents to us it looks like the shadow of the character as seen in the silhouette posters.

The packaging is a nice bright red color, with the iconic silhouette of the characters - as seen on many Reservoir Dogs posters - with a small yellow swatch across it where the title sits. The material and style of the package are the typical PVC types that most companies are using these days for six inch figures.

For the most part you would need to go to a specialty shop for these figures. Meaning, you wouldn't find them at your average Toys R' Us, but rather at the now defunct stores such as Tower Records and Suncoast Video.

Neca produced a five pack of the figures for those who wanted to get them all in one fell swoop. Unfortunately, this particular set was harder to come by than the individual figures.

The reason for this was usually due to poor sales at said specialty shops. Because most people don't go to video stores looking for action figures, many people didn't know they were out there. In turn, the figures sat on shelves until they were finally sold off in massive clearance sales. Of course, it didn't help that prior to being on clearance, the figures were incredibly expensive - Usually fifteen to twenty dollars a piece.

This is definitely a line geared towards Tarantino fanatics. We don't see the appeal to the average film watcher. This is also one of those lines that doesn't feel like it would be worth buying one or two figures. Meaning you would probably want to buy them all or none of them. They're fine looking figures, but we get the sense that unless Reservoir Dogs is one of your all time favorite movies, the figures have no appeal to them.

The Year Without A Santa Claus (Neca)

Out of respect for our brothers and sisters around the world who don't celebrate the Christmas holiday, we've decided that we will not shove a bunch of holiday related toys down your throat this December (with the exception of our daily Advent Calendar toy). Thus, we present the small line, The Year Without A Santa Claus as our way of saying that this will be our year without Santa on our site. This will be the only Christmas themed line we will be bringing you this month.

Once again we turn to Neca, who has been getting a lot of attention from us these past few weeks, for a look at their 2006 line based off of the 1974 Rankin/Bass stop motion animated television special. In the show, Santa is told by his doctor that people don't care about Christmas anymore, and that he should change up his routines. With that in mind, Santa decides to take a break. Jingle and Jangle, two of Santa's elves, are left with the task of finding people who still believe in him.

The two opposite forces of nature, Heat Miser and his stepbrother Snow Miser play a role in the special as they battle against each other for dominance of the weather. The two characters have become the most well known Rankin/Bass characters, and this is present in the toy line from Neca where they are essentially the main focus.

The two individual characters were released on card, and would be the only figures released this way.

Coinciding with the individually carded figures were the two box sets which each contained three figures.

Neca would also go on to produce a line of figures based on the special, though in most respects the figures are really no different from the Neca versions. For fans of the show, we can see the nostalgic value that these figures would hold for them.

With that said, we wish all of you a happy holiday (if you celebrate this time of year).
