Comics Corner: The Amazing Spider-Man 251

Title: The Amazing Spider-Man
Issue Number: 251
Release Date: April 1984

Highlights

  • All of Norman Osborn's journals have been destroyed by the fire, and Hobgoblin has no backup copies - All their secrets are lost
  • Hobgoblin escapes the blaze of his hideout by crashing through the flames with his armor plated battle van
  • He attempts to run over a down Spider-Man, but the hero grabs on to the bottom of the vehicle, also being taken from the burning building in the process
  • Reference is made to The Amazing Spider-Man 249, and 250
  • Spider-Man still doesn't have his spider sense back
  • Hobgoblin tells Spider-Man that he'll never get through the glass of the battle van because it's made of special reinforced jet age plastic, and would take the force of a concussion grenade to break it
  • Hobgoblin is shocked when he sees that Spider-Man does indeed poses the strength to break the window with his fist
  • Hobgoblin feels fear of Spider-Man for the first time
  • Spider-Man's spidey senses return, just as Hobgoblin is pummeling him into submission
  • The battle van crashes into the Hudson River, and despite going down into the murky depths, Hobgoblin keeps fighting
  • The water from the river shorts the van's systems, and activates the self destruct systems
  • The van explodes, separating the two, and when Spider-Man goes back, he only finds a damaged mask of the Hobgoblin - Is he dead? No
  • Spider-Man tells J. Jonah Jameson that everything went up in flames, and the the public will never find out about his involvement in creating the Scorpion
  • J. Jonah Jameson just laughs, and shows Spider-Man the morning paper showing his confession, and that he's stepping down as editor-in-chief
  • When asked why he would do that, Jameson says that he loves the paper, and won't see it's journalistic integrity be brought down by anyone, even himself - However, he's not stepping down as publisher
  • Joe Robertson is promoted as the new editor-in-chief
  • Peter and Harry meet later, with Peter telling Harry that he shouldn't worry about his father's past, and instead focus on being a better person for himself, and his future child
  • As Harry leaves, Peter is once again hit with a massive surge of spidey sense, but this time he manages to pinpoint the source that is setting it off
  • Spider-Man follows his senses to the middle of Central Park where he finds a steel white dome structure
  • Upon swinging into the dome, Spider-Man disappears in a flash of light, with the story continuing in Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars issue 1
  • The symbiote saga is about to kick into high gear but...
Low Points
  • ...The continuity issues continue
    • I've already noted multiple times the issues with Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man 86 being read before The Amazing Spider-Man 249 - 251, followed by Marvel Team-Up 138, and then finally Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man 87 - To reiterate
      • Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man 86 is read prior to The Amazing Spider-Man 249
      • However, Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man 87 immediately take place after issue 86, and there's no room for anything to have possibly occurred between those two issues
      • Further, the events of The Amazing Spider-Man 250, and 251 continue the events of 249 immediately, with no room for anything to have possibly occurred between those two issues
      • Issue 138 of Marvel Team-Up is noted to come after issue 251 of The Amazing Spider-Man, but the ending of AMS 251 leaves no possible way for the events of MTU 138 to occur afterwards, and even says it continues in Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars 1
      • Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man 87 makes reference to the event of the spider sense surge from AMS 249, meaning it occurs after that issue, but again, issue 86 of PP, TSSM doesn't leave a gap for any other events to have occurred other than those that continue in issue 87, nor do the events of AMS 249 - 251
