Retro Spins: Green Day - 1,000 Hours

Yes, they were a band that started in the 80's. Green Day released the EP 1,000 Hours in 1989, which stunk, failed miserably, and they were never heard from again.

...Yeah, I wish.

Prior to aiding in the ushering of ruining music as we knew it, Green Day formed with trio, Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt, and John Kiffmeyer. Together, they recorded the aforementioned EP. In all seriousness, it didn't make a very large impact on the industry. Further, nor did their follow up EP, Slappy (1990), or subsequent first two studio albums, 39/Smooth (1990), and Kerplunk (1991), the latter of which would see the exit of Kiffmeyer, replaced by long standing member, TrĂ© Cool.

It wouldn't be until the commercial success of their 1994 album, Dookie, that fans would take notice of their prior releases, and gobble them up. These became so popular, but difficult to find due to their limited pressings, that the band would re-release their first two EP's and debut album as a compilation on 1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours. However, since 2009, they have also re-issued the original EP's and debut album separately.

As I fired up 1,000 Hours, I was met with a wall of sound and energy that my ears immediately rejected. It was noise. Nothing more, nothing less. Unenjoyable noise at that. You know how when you're trying to enjoy a quite day, and all you hear in the background is a siren, jack hammering, or screaming children? Yeah, that is was 1,000 Hours what equivalent of.

There were no catchy riffs, no well thought out lyrics. Nothing to actually hook you. It was like getting punched in the face repeatedly, and being expected to say, "Wow, this is so amazing and different!" I made it about seven minutes into this twelve minute, four track EP, before my ears simply couldn't take it anymore.

Hearing this only served to remind me all the more how bands like Green Day, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and so on, took everything that the 80's built, and destroyed it before their decade was over. Garbage bands, and garbage music that only wanted to be loud, angry, and nonsensical. Sorry, but I don't listen to music to be miserable. I'm looking for good times, happy feelings, and entertainment. This EP offered none of that.
