Retro Spins: Dead Or Alive - Youthquake

Dead or Alive
Youthquake
1985

Dead Or Alive finally had the breakthrough they were looking for in May of 1985 with their album Youthquake - Or perhaps more properly stated, with their hit You Spin Me Round (Like A Record). The song would hit the charts in June and power its way up to number eleven in August before descending back down the charts.

In September of that same year, the single Lover Come Back would debut in a mid nineties spot, but disappear immediately thereafter poising the band for the status of one hit wonder were it not for one other hit in the band's career which would come with their follow up album.

As a whole, the album showcases a very dance friendly club style. Heavy beats with toe tapping rhythm and breaks. I could definitely hear these tracks blaring through the stereo speakers of a local club, school gymnasium or roller rink.

Sadly, and where its true "issue" lies, it lacks any hard hitters beyond the first track which is coincidentally You Spin Me Round. I did add two others to my IPOD simply because they were catch, but I'm honestly not sure if I'll listen to them repeatedly or continue to skip them until they eventually get deleted. Those two tracks were; Big Daddy of the Rhythm and It's Been A Long Time.

Overall, it's not a bad album and I won't call it down for the count just because my first play as a whole didn't yield many favorites. I will say this - At least it was easy to listen to and didn't become annoying background noise.

  1. I have this one of vinyl also.I listened to it a good number of times before I bought the 45 of You Spin Me Round and the full record was never played again. I remember thinking this album reminded me a lot of Flock of Seagulls "listen" because it wasn't a bad album at all but I was really only interested in the hit from it.

    1. I certainly got a lot play back in the 80's. It's one of the songs I remember hearing numerous times throughout the same day - On the same stations at that.

    1. Seems like a common thing for this particular song.
