Title: The Spectacular Spider-Man
Issue Number: 153
Release Date: August 1989
Highlights
- First appearance of Armand
- Death of Bruiser
- Bruiser is out of solitary confinement from his last prison fight, and is impressed with Robbie having bulked up a bit
- Robbie informs him he's worked out twice a day since that day
- Robbie asks why Bruiser is helping him, and is told he reminds the big man of his brother Stu
- Stu apparently was well learned, and wanted to be a lawyer
- When Robbie asks if he ever achieved his goal, Bruiser informs him he doesn't know because he hasn't see his brother in fifteen years
- Tombstone eyes the two working out, and tells his prison gang members that tonight they're doing the big guy
- Reference is made to Web Of Spider-Man 53, which narration tells us this issue of The Spectacular Spider-Man takes place ten minutes after Spider-Man went into the East River
- Spidey is headed for Kingpin's tower, but is met by gunfire from a gang he's not familiar with
- They're dressed in old time gangster suits
- J. Jonah Jameson (Chameleon) calls for Spider-Man to follow him through a building's door
- He questions why Jameson is there, but doesn't look a gift horse in the mouth
- It's apparently all part of the plan, and Hammerhead orders his men to cease fire once Spidey is inside
- Making her way back to Aunt May's house, Mary Jane sees an ambulance there, and someone coming out on a stretcher
- It's Kristy, and she's had a mild heart attack, even though she's only thirteen years old
- Robbie and Bruiser make their way to the showers after working out, only to walk right into an ambush
- Bruiser is struck by several sharp projectiles from silenced weapons
- The two retreat to solitary confinement, and lock themselves inside
- Tombstone tells Armand to go get a key from their friendly trustee
- Inside the building, Spider-Man's spidey senses continue to go off, and as he questions Jameson, gunfire riddles the building, and Hammerhead's thugs burst in
- As Spider-Man is distracted by the fight, Jameson sneaks a syringe from his coat, and sticks the hero with a virus, blacking him out
- Back in the prison, Bruiser has had Robbie pull all the shrapnel from him, and he makes his way to his feet as Tombstone swings open the door
- Tombstone gives Bruiser one chance to submit, but is met by a fist from the man
- Meanwhile, a drugged Spider-Man battles Hammerhead
- As Tombstone beats Bruiser into submission, he gives him one final chance to beg, he refuses
- On the other hand, Hammerhead thinks he's done the same to Spider-Man, but gets socked right in the mouth, and then pummeled by the hero who then retreats to stop the gang war
- As Tombstone beats Bruiser to death, he congratulates him on not begging, and figuring out he was going to die anyway
- After the deed, Tombstone tells Robbie they need to talk, one-on-one
- Before their conversation can start, an alarm sounds in the prison, causing prisoners to scatter back to their cages
- Outside Kingpin's tower, Spider-Man wants to take a moment to rest, but this too is cut short by gunfire erupting from the building
- The final page informs that the story continues in Web Of Spider-Man 54
- Still a long and drawn out story, but at least the gang war has finally started
Oddities
