Title: Web Of Spider-Man
Issue Number: 28
Release Date: July 1987
Highlights
- First appearance of Hershel, Milicent Peabody, Randolph, and Reuben
- The issue is a flashback story from Peter's perspective, as he regales Mary Jane with the tale
- Peter tells Mary Jane that before the Statue of Liberty underwent renovations, that it used to be one of his favorite places to be alone, and that he even used to stash his civilian clothes in the torch
- Spider-Man leaves a broken webshooter in the statue's torch, only to watch as a helicopter airlifts Lady Liberties light away to be restored
- Peter finds out from the Bugle where the restoration is taking place so that he can track down his spidey device, but it's not good news - It's headed to California to be part of a float in a parade
- Robbie offers to send Peter to California to do a piece on the parade
- In California, a radical group of rich snobs intends to steal the torch, and use it as a protest for avocado farms
- Peter falls asleep on the beach, and gets severely sunburned
- The rich snobs bring food to the guards at night, and then Tasers them
- Spider-Man crashes the party, but also takes a Taser blast in the process
- With all the commotion, Hershel takes off in the truck that the torch is loaded on, leaving everyone behind
- Milicent and Randolph angrily give chase
- Peter informs Mary Jane that Hershel never intended to use the torch as ransom, instead, he's struck a deal with a French business tycoon to sell it to him
- Hershel crashes the truck sending the torch flying, and landing on a car
- The impact somehow sends the car speeding off, with Spider-Man on top, and somehow the break line cut
- Spider-Man manages to stop it with a massive web net
- Spider-Man discovers the torch he's been chasing after was a fake, simply sent to L.A. to be used as a prop
- Back in New York, Spider-Man recovers his personal belongings from the real torch
- This is clearly not a serious toned story, but it is, however, another waste of time one
Oddities
- When Spider-Man recovers his belongings, they're still wrapped up in webbing - That should have dissolved a long time ago
- Despite being used in the parade, the fake torch still somehow ends up in the French business tycoon's home in France
