Li'l Penny (Playmates Toys)

Li'l Penny is Playmates homage to basketball player, Penny Hardaway. Because I know little to nothing about basketball or Hardaway in general, I won't bore you with my Wikipedia based write up. You can look into that for yourself "HERE".

Suffice to say, I came across three versions of Li'l Penny, and decided I would snap a few photos to post up for the day.

 14 Inch Talking Li'l Penny

Playmates created a fourteen inch Talking Li'l Penny, as well as two nine inch ones, each with their own respective "names"; Pro Li'l Penny and House Party Li'l Penny.

These are definitely niche item toys for the company, and an odd one to dabble in. However, it's no surprise considering by 1997 the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles brand was drying up rapidly for the company, and they were obviously in need of something to fill that void.

Another interesting aspect to this line is how solid secondary market prices have stayed. The nine inch versions can easily set you back $20.00 to $30.00 each, and the fourteen inch talking version can go for as much as $60.00. Admittedly, this was very shocking to me, but then again, obscure lines typically do come with a steep buy in.

  1. Pretty sure this started with an advertising campaign where Penny was talking to a little puppet of himself. Will search on Youtube...

  2. And Chris Rock does the voice of the puppet. Hysterical.

    1. Not only are you correct, but that puppet is FREAKY! I'm talking the stuff nightmares are made of.

  3. Living as close to Memphis as I do it would be hard for even a non-basketball fan such as myself not be aware of Penny Hardaway! I remember him playing for the Tigers and later going pro. He is currently the Coach of the University of Memphis Tigers basketball team! (And from all accounts doing a darn good job if it as well!)
