Comics Corner: Web Of Spider-Man 18

    

Title: Web Of Spider-Man

Highlights

  • First appearance of Medgar DuPaul, Deputy Sheriff Sarah, Sheriff Andrews
  • First cameo of Eddie Brock, but only his hand, and he is unnamed
  • The destruction of Spider-Man's red suit
  • Last appearance of Seth and Charla Hanks
  • Peter Parker makes it home to New York, wearing nothing more than a long coat, and a small piece of the red and blue Spider-Man suit
    • He's let into his apartment by Mary Jane who is there worrying about him, but wasn't expecting him to show up
  • Peter says that with his red and blue suit gone, it's officially him and the black suit
  • Peter's web shooters have also been damaged
  • Mary Jane demands an answer to where Peter has been, and he regales the flashback tale
  • While in Delaware, Peter is arrested - See lows and oddities for more information
  • While being taken to the prison work fields, Peter is pulled aside, and taken to the mansion of Medgar DuPaul with other prisons
  • Medgar DuPaul pays to have prisoner's brought to him to hunt them for sport
  • Deputy Sheriff Sarah follows Sheriff Andrews to DuPaul's home, discovering what's going on
  • Peter helps Sarah defeat Andrews and DuPaul, and in turn, she returns his affects, and lets him go free
  • After a long sleep, Peter returns to the Bugle to explain to Jonah and Joy where he's been, of course it's not the actual story
    • In all his compassion, Jonah tells Peter everything is okay, and that he doesn't need to be ready for another assignment until tomorrow
  • While waiting for his train, a mysterious hand stretches out, and pushes Peter onto the tracks towards an oncoming train
    • Peter is able to get to safety, but is completely panicked that his spider senses didn't warn him of the danger
      • The story of Venom has officially begun

Low Points
  • Peter steals a blueberry pie from someone's window, is arrested for it, and sent to prison
  • Peter gives a fake name in prison, Jay Jameson
  • The story collapses under common sense - See oddities below
Oddities
  • Peter hitchhikes from West Virginia to Delaware, making his way back to New York, all while talking about how he had no money for food, or travel - Um...Make a collect call to the Bugle, and tell them you're stranded
    • Surely Joy had filled them in that Peter was missing after their assignment, and people were genuinely worried about him

Title: The Amazing Spider-Man Annual

Highlights

  • First appearance of Ann Macintosh, Angelli, and Bernie
  • First appearance of Sherwood Nursing Home
  • J. Jonah Jameson and Marla Madison announce they are getting married
  • Spider-Man brings a bouquet of roses to J. Jonah Jameson to congratulate him, and plants a big masked kiss on the old curmudgeon as he quickly exits through the window
  • Reference is made to The Amazing Spider-Man 258
  • Ned Leeds is back from his assignment
  • J. Jonah Jameson goes to a sanitarium in the suburbs to tell his son John that he's getting married - It doesn't go well
  • Scorpion is also locked in the sanitarium, and hearing the news of Jamison's marriage, he musters all his strength and escapes, but not before kidnapping John Jamison
  • Scorpion crashes into Marla Madison's apartment attempting to kidnap her, but Spider-Man enters the fray
  • During the fight, Marla is blasted in the arm by Scorpions tail laser
  • J. Jonah Jameson slips the police watching his home, and jumps in a taxi, heading for his fiancée
  • John escapes, and when he sees Jameson pleading for Scorpion to let Marla go, just for her to tell Jameson to forget about her and escape, he realizes how much they love each other
  • Jameson tells Scorpion that he's been paying the sanitarium to help the villain, as well as the victims he hurt
  • Scorpion gives Jameson a choice of which one dies - His fiancée, or his son - Jameson picks himself
  • Spider-Man dives in, giving the three a chance to run as he wallops Scorpion into unconsciousness, and webs him up
  • Jameson and his son reconcile
  • J. Jonah Jameson and Marla Madison get married

Oddities
  • Editor's Day Off: As Spider-Man hustles away from Scorpion, he says, "Boy, you sure take take the fun out of web-swinging."

Comics Corner: Ka-Zar The Savage 18

  • First appearance of Ramona Coutland, Dr. "Doc" Cortland, and Norm
  • First appearance and death of Charles, Tyrannosaurus rex, and Dimetrodon
  • First appearance of Ka-Zar's treehouse, and the Cortland's seaplane
  • Ka-Zar takes a gunshot to the head, and must be transported to Manhattan from the Savage Land
  • The artwork is actually really good
Low Points
  • No Spider-Man, but the beginning of a story arc that will eventually lead to him showing up
Oddities
  • Editor's Day Off: Shanna says, "You think all have to do...
  • How exactly does one survive a gunshot head to the head, let alone a flight from the Savage Land to Manhattan?

  • Flash Thompson and Sha Shan walk hand and hand together, starting a relationship
  • Holly throws a Frisbie at the back of Flash Thompson's head...because she thinks it's funny (for some reason)...but it's caught by Hector Ayala, AKA White Tiger
  • Cliffhanger ending with an explosion in a prison cell...But did the unidentified prisoner die?

  • First appearance of Ned Leeds , but not by name - just seen with Betty Brant on a date

  • Spider-Man is barely in it and there's no battle with any villains
Oddities
  • Peter is so desperate to make money that he's even willing to sell the formula to his web fluid
  • Throughout the entire issue, Anna May Watson is incorrectly referred to as Mrs. Watkins
