Title: The Spectacular Spider-Man

Highlights

• The skeletal remains of Ned Leeds, Gwen Stacy, and Spider-Man rise from the ground, and Betty sees all of this, though she's miles away in Flash Thompson's apartment
• Betty tells Flash about her vision, and Flash tells her that he wishes Spider-Man were there because he's his hero
• The demons outside overhear this
• Flash and Betty are the only ones left in the building
• Outside it's a furnace, inside an ice cube
• The demons of N'Astirh have been given free reign to "play" with the humans
• On the roof, "Spider-Man" appears before Flash, and starts fighting with him, while in the apartment, the remains of Ned Leeds arrive, scaring Betty
• "Spider-Man" webs Flash to an antenna, and removes the lightning rod from the roof, making Flash the potential new conduit
• Inside, Betty whimpers for help, but the ghost of Ned Leeds appears to her, and tells her she needs to stop depending on everyone else for strength, but instead to help herself
• Back on the roof, Flash breaks free of the webbing, and realizes that the fact that he broke free means this isn't the real Spider-Man, and the fight continues
• The demons reveal themselves to both Ned and Flash, and Betty explodes the apartment with a gas heater, fleeing with Flash at the last moment
• Outside, the skies clear, and the demons vanish
• Reference is made to X-Factor 38
• The Inferno storyline ends, but...

Low Points

• Without reading the full Inferno storyline, everything just resolves itself in the span of one panel with no explanation

Oddities

• Editor's Day Off: The narration from Flash Thompson's thoughts reads, "I heard a dog whimper like like that once"

• Betty blows up Flash Thompson's apartment

Title: The Spectacular Spider-Man

Highlights

• First appearance of Mr. Wexler
• Hobgoblin flies through the city, fresh off his defeat against Harry Osborn and Spider-Man, and acting like a baby about it
• While he mopes, a group of demons attack him, but he's able to defeat them
• The though of becoming a demon, as he's already dressed as one makes him ponder
• Reference is made to The Amazing Spider-Man 312, Web Of Spider-Man 47, and "current issues" of X-Men
• Spider-Man gets knocked from the sky by a massive wind, and when he's slammed across a building façade is bitten by a gargoyle demon, and sent hurtling to the ground
• After awakening from being knocked out, Spidey slowly makes his way to the Daily Bugle
• Inside, led by J. Jonah Jameson, the staff are barricading the city room, and arming themselves for battle against the demons
• Spider-Man enters the room, and passes out in Jameson's arms
• At her now derailed photo shoot, Mary Jane and the crew are battling against their own series of attacking demons
• As Green Goblin leaves the city, he's attacked by a water demon who tells him to stay within the barrier of the city to be a meal for his master, N'Astirh
• Harry deduces he made it through the barrier before it closed, and decides he should check on Aunt May for Peter's sake
• We see that several demons have gotten out of the barrier as well, and are swarming Queens
• Hobgoblin makes his way to the Empire State Building, the source of the demons, and demands to see their master
• Hobgoblin offers his sould to N'Astirh for demonic powers, and this makes the demon laugh, who then takes his soul before zapping him away
• Back at the Bugle, the demons attack again
• Spider-Man comes to, and fights side by side with Jonah
• After the battle, Spider-Man's side begins to bleed again, causing him to also pass out again
• The deal is done, and Hobgoblin becomes possessed by Demogoblin

Oddities

• In a moment of clarity, Robbie Robertson says he's been running from his issue with Tombstone too long, and it's time for him to take a stand
• He's talking about the horde of frightened people preparing to attack him with handheld blunt objects
• So he's afraid of Tombstone, but is brave now to take on a group of people in a physical fight?

Title: The Spectacular Spider-Man

Highlights

• As Spider-Man swings home, happy with his day, he's suddenly attached by a robotic monster air vent, and worse, his spidey sense doesn't warn him
• He makes short order of it, but finds no clues as to who was behind the attack
• Mary Jane and her cousin, Kristy, walk home with groceries, and we learn from Kristy thinking to herself that her parents don't actually know she's there
• As the two enter the Bedford Towers building, a lamp post above seemingly comes to life
• A still recovering Joe Robertson returns home from a walk, letting his wife know he managed to make it around the block
• Joe and his wife still disagree with him pleading guilty as an accessory to Tombstone's murders
• Harry Osborne is once again woken up by nightmares
• His wife convinces him that moving back to the old Osborne house wasn't a good idea, and Harry agrees to move back to Jersey over the weekend
• Meanwhile, outside, Hobgoblin once again watches the house
• Cousin Kristy sneaks into the bathroom while Peter is showering, and gives him a towel
• Mary Jane tells her not to flirt with her man
• Harry calls Peter and asks him to meet him at his chemical plant in Manhattan
• Peter immediately worries if the Green Goblin has something to do with it
• Ben Urich is on the scene of a crime where twenty local mob lieutenants have been murdered
• There's blood spelling out a threat to Kingpin on one of the tables
• The Arrangers arrives, but plays dumb, saying that the location is merely one of Wilson Fisk's assets, and he has no knowledge of what happened
• At the Bugle, J. Jonah Jameson goes ballistic over a headline on the front page about poltergeists
• Eduardo Lobo bumps into Glory Grant, and to apologize, takes her to lunch, swooning her every step of the way
• At the chemical plant, Peter tells Harry to sell his dad's old house, and move back to Jersey, but just as he says this, his spider senses kick in
• The pipes around the plant come to life, and start attacking, but just as they do, Peter's spidey senses stop working
• A quick change to Spider-Man, and our hero is thrust into the job of saving his friend's life
• As he does, he ponders if the timing of Harry's nightmares, and the sudden inanimate objects coming to life are somehow connected
• As the plant burns, Harry gets angry, telling Peter it's all he had left of his dad, and rebuilding it would mean it would never be the same again
• Spider-Man catches a glimpse of Hobgoblin flying away from the scene
• That night, Harry awakens again from a nightmare, but this time when he goes to the bathroom to get a drink of water, the face of Green Goblin stares at him in the mirror, telling him the he, Harry, belongs to him

Highlights

• First appearance of Kristy Watson, Cynthia Bernhammer, and NYPD officer, Lieutenant Frank Farrow
• Death of Teddy Tones
• Picking up where the last issue left off, Peter is startled awake in his hotel room by a revelation - Baxter wasn't Boomerang's target, Crippen was, and Baxter was behind it all
• Spider-Man heads out to investigate Baxter's yacht, but is ambushed by Boomerang, who gases him unconscious
• Back in New York, Ben Urich received a tip from Lieutenant Frank Farrow, who allows him to come down to a crime scene to get exclusive photos
• The body of Teddy Tones has been bled dry, and the blood used to write a message to Kingpin on a window
• Outside the apartment building to their home, a late Mary Jane literally runs into her cousin, Kristy Watson who says she's there to visit until Easter
• Robbie Roberston is out on bail, but informs his legal counsel, Cynthia Bernhammer, that he wants to plead guilty, much to the protest of his son and J. Jonah Jameson
• As Spider-Man comes to, he finds himself chained up in a speedboat
• Boomerang informs him it's loaded with plastic explosives, which will go off as he drifts towards Baxter during the race, providing one last alibi for the man
• After Boomerang takes his leave, Spider-Man is able to break free, but the villain notice this, and circles back
• Baxter uses every dirty trick in the book to attempt to win the yacht race
• Smoke clouds from the side of his boat, and hidden rocket engines on the back
• Spider-Man hangs on the bottom of the boat, and then surprise attacks Boomerang
• During the confusion, the boat heads straight towards Baxter's yacht, and seeing the inevitable collision, they all bail out

Low Points

• It's like Wacky Races, but with Spider-Man
• All that's missing is Baxter saying, "And I would have gotten away with it too if it weren't for you meddling kids"

Title: The Spectacular Spider-Man

Highlights

• First appearance of Louise Baxter III, Tama Janowitz, Ruth, Mr. Lily, and Ed
• First appearance and death of Artie Crippen
• Louise Baxter III is appearing on the show, Hello There, San Diego talking about his love for boating, and his disdain for his fortune
• Peter Parker is also appearing on the show, another promotion for his book, Webs, along with another writer, Tmam Janowitz
• Baxter informs the host that in a few days, his boat, "the Champion" will go up against Melbourne tycoon, Artie Crippen for the North American Cup
• When it's Peter's turn to talk about his book, and Spider-Man, Boomerang, who is watching on television, destroys it in anger
• Reference is made to The Amazing Spider-Man 281
• The television belonged to Mr. Lily, who goes through the plan with Boomerang, and it all involves the marina where the racing boats are stored
• After the interview, Baxter catches up with Peter and Tama, and offers him some advice on making all interviews about himself with self absorption
• After a rough day, Peter has a well needed call with Mary Jane, and when he hangs up, realizes his bad day is more so because he misses her, and swinging around the city as Spider-Man, the latter he rectifies by suiting up, and heading out into the night
• Though he tries to ignore an explosion at the marina, not wanting to get involved, Spider-Man finds himself eves dropping on the security guard, learning about a found boomerang, and seeing a shadowy figure on the rooftops
• He's oddly happy to have run into a familiar villain in a strange new city
• Back in New York, Robbie Robertson returns to the Daily Bugle, greeted by a standing ovation from everyone there
• The warm welcome is cut short when a couple of Federal Marshalls show up to arrest Robbie Robertson as an accessory to Tombstone's murders
• Peter steps away from signing books to have lunch with Baxter, but his warnings about Boomerang fall on deaf ears
• Lunch is interrupted by an angry Artie Crippen who shouts at Baxter for trying to get him blocked from the race through various means
• Peter's spidey senses warn him of danger, and he sees Boomerang fling a boomerang at Baxter
• Peter knocks Baxter out of the way, but the projectile strikes Artie in the throat, killing him
• Baxter is all broken up about it, leading Peter to conclude their feud was only for publicity
• After a quick change, Spider-Man grabs hold of Boomerang, but the villain uses his rocket boots to no only take off, but then to flash Spider-Man, knocking him in the water
• Baxter gets stopped by a reporter who asks about the rumors of he and Artie being rivals, to which Baxter said it was all to the contrary
• However, we then cut to Baxter's office, and him stroking a check to Boomerang for Killing Artie

Low Points

• Peter really needs to get back to New York, and stay there
• This whole traveling the country to sign books is lame

Title: The Spectacular Spider-Man Annual

Highlights

• First appearance of Junipur, Katos, and Professor Quint
• Spider-Man sits atop a roof petting a stray cat and pondering if Mary Jane would be upset if he brought it home when a stray explosion hits close to him
• Reference is made to The Spectacular Spider-Man 142, 143, The Amazing Spider-Man Annual 22, The Amazing Spider-Man 90, and 148
• Spider-Man swoops down and deals with the High Evolutionary's armored men, and then goes to check on the girl they were chasing, only to come face to face with the clone of Gwen Stacy
• Seeing each other startles them both
• The battle with the armored men commences, and in the tussle, Gwen has taken off on foot
• High Evolutionary's men return to him, having failed their mission a third time
• He explains to Quint why he needs Gwen Stacy - To study her genetic makeup
• Peter digs out an old photo album of him and Gwen, looking through it while he waits for Mary Jane to come home
• When she does, he explains to her what's going on
• The High Evolutionary spies on the Young Gods training for battle, but they realize he's there, and what his plan is for humanity
• Some of them think they should do something about it, but Katos tells them they shouldn't get involved
• Not listening, Brightsword has Highnote transport him and her, along with Daydreamer, Mindsinger, Sea Witch, Splice, and Junipur to Earth
• Katos informs the rest they need to go after them before they bring disaster to all humanity
• As Mary Jane and Peter wait for the inevitable arrival of Gwen, Mary Jane gets upset, feeling like she's never stood a chance with Peter as long as Gwen was in the picture
• Peter tells her that he doesn't love Gwen anymore, but in his mind, calls himself a liar
• Gwen tracks down Peter to his new apartment through Betty Brant
• As she grabs him for a hug, his Spider-Man costume gets exposed under his robe
• Gwen panics, and runs away
• Mary Jane tells Peter he still loves Gwen, and to find her, help her, but come home to him with a clear heart, or don't come home
• Spider-Man grabs Gwen, and tries to explain, but she immediately blames him for killing her father
• Distracted, and trying to explain, the High Evolutionary's men attack
• Quint grabs Gwen, and transports back to their hidden base, but Spider-Man jumps on, and goes along
• As the entire base attacks Spider-Man, the rogue Young Gods appear on the scene, and immediately join the fray
• The remaining Young Gods also show up, but immediately set to the task of stopping their comrades
• However, it ends abruptly when Daydreamer sneaks up on Calculus, and zaps his mind harder than she expected, sending him into a screaming frenzy
• Spider-Man frees Gwen, and calms her down by telling her he's Peter
• They embrace, but he tells her that it's over between them because he's in love with someone else
• Caduceus is able to repair Calculus's mind
• The Young Gods depart
• Spider-Man demands to know what High Evolutionary wanted with the clone of Gwen Stacy
• He explains that he wanted to learn how Professor Warren created her, and in probing learned she never was a clone of Gwen Stacy, rather a near identical woman that Warren kidnapped, and genetically altered
• High Evolutionary transports Spider-Man and "the woman" out of his fortress
• As the now confused woman questions everything, Daydream appears behind her, and returns her original memories to her
• The woman, who Peter still doesn't know, simply wanders off, presumably back to where she remembers she was from
• Peter returns to Mary Jane, and when asked if he loves Gwen, he says of course he does, but that she's dead, and part of his past, while Mary Jane is now and his future

Low Points

• There's a second story featuring the Young Gods, and a third all about High Evolutionary, but neither include Spider-Man
• These annuals are really long and drawn out
• Take out the Young Gods, and the story isn't impacted at all, instead, it's tighter, and moves along better

Highlights

• Death of Persuader, AKA Roland Rayburn
• First appearance of the security guard, Mel Zimmerman, Ben, the bartender, Dave, Steve, Andrea, and the Lobo Brothers, Eduardo and Carlos
• First appearance and death of the hired gunman, Andrew
• First appearance of the locations Herdling Refinery, Grapevine Lake, and the Lobo's Mansion
• Spider-Man has been returning to Punisher's boat, following the events that had them both investigating Tombstone, but he hasn't returned
• Some would be burglars try to rob the boat, and thinking they might have information, he pounces them, but learns nothing
• Punisher is spotted at the Dallas airport by a security guard who's good at remembering faces
• A report overhears him confronting the vigilante
• The Arranger attempts to fill Kingpin in on current events, which is actually just a synopsis for the readers, but is told to shut up, and that he, the Kingpin, is more interested in his revenge on Daredevil
• The clone of Gwen Stacy is on a bus in Ohio, headed towards Peter Parker, looking for his help
• The vehicle is attacked by the High Evolutionary's men, who are continuing their pursuit of her
• Reference is made to The Amazing Spider-Man 308 and 309
• Peter meets Mary Jane at a bar, and the two have dinner plans
• Those plans are interrupted by a news report saying that the Punisher was spotted at the Dallas airport
• As Peter storms off to catch a plane, Mary Jane calms herself down saying she knew there would be days like this, and that she's not angry...much
• Punisher infiltrates an oil refinery being used to smuggle drugs for the Lobo brothers, and does what he does best, kill people, and blow it up
• When Peter arrives in Dallas, he meets up with Andrea who works on the team promoting the book Webs (see oddities)
• He shows up to attend a convention to sign copies of his book, and asks her about the Lobo brothers (see oddities)
• In doing so, we get a backstory on them
• Peter takes a break while signing books to dip out as Spider-Man, and hunt for the Punisher
• He finds him on the tail end of a killing spree at the Lobo brother's mansion
• He's holding the brothers at gunpoint, and they tell him to do what he's going to do, and tell the Kinpin that they spit on him
• This temporarily breaks the "spell" he's under by the Persuader
• Spider-Man breaks up the party by webbing Punisher's gun away, but this only starts a fight between the two
• The Lobo brothers dip out during the scuffle
• Spider-Man is grazed across the head by a bullet, temporarily knocking him unconscious
• He awakens to Punisher standing over him with his gun drawn
• Instead of shooting Spidey, Punisher turns his weapon on Andrew, and Persuader, killing them both
• He tells Persuader that he only fogged his brain, but never had control of his mind
• Seeing and hearing everything from a safe distance, the Lobo brothers profess their forthcoming revenge on Kingpin

Low Points

• Peter is explaining to a kid how his older red and blue costume wasn't as easy to capture on film as his new one
• The kid tells him he thinks it stinks, and is promptly told by Peter, "G'way, kid, ya bother me."

Oddities

• Pretty convenient there just so happens to be a convention in town that very day for Peter to trek to Dallas and sign books at
• How would Andrea know about a pair of local drug dealers when she works in book promotion?

Title: The Spectacular Spider-Man

Highlights

• First appearance of Lansing, Michigan, and Baxter High School, as well as Tara Square in Atlanta, Georgia
  
• Tombstone has hurt Mary Jane, breaking her wrist, and that doesn't sit will with Peter Parker at all
• Tombstone calls Peter at the emergency room, and tells him to meet him in Atlanta, where he knows Peter needs to be for his next book signing
• Before leaving Spider-Man attempts to contact the Punisher, but can't reach him
• This is because the Punisher is being held by the Arranger, and tortured by Persuader, who is trying to break his mind
• He does, and the Punisher is now under his control
• While attempting to walk, Robbie is taunted by a hallucination of Tombstone, which only serves to make him both mentally and physically stronger
• As he claws his way across the hand beams, taking step after step, he finally collapses, telling his son to call J. Jonah Jameson and inform him that he has a front page story for the Bugle
• In Lansing, Michigan, the clone of Gwen Stacy walks from the Baxter High School building, where she now works
• She's attacked by the High Evolutionary's men
• As she runs away, she remembers Peter Parker, and is determined to find him to help her
• Back in Atlanta, Spider-Man is at the rendezvous location, and Tombstone surprise attacks him
• Meanwhile, Robbie meets with Jameson, and begins telling his story, and history with Tombstone
• Spider-Man lets Tombstone get his licks in, but then brushes them off, and explaining that Tombstone, despite his appearance is just a man, and he, Spider-Man has the proportionate strength of a spider, before walloping the villain
• Before lights out, he asks Tombstone why he never killed Robbie, to which he responds, "He's my friend"
• Deep down, in his own twisted way, Tombstone really thinks Robbie Robertson is his only friend
• Robbie finishes telling his story, and says that he's prepared to resign, since his legal situation is about to get rough as an accessory to Tombstone's murders
• Jameson refuses his resignation, and tells him to be in the office on Monday by 9:00 AM, or he's docking his pay
• The Arrangers watches on television the reports of Tombstone being arrested
• Though he finds it disappointing, he's at least happy to have the Punisher under his control, and ready for his first assignment

Title: The Spectacular Spider-Man

Highlights

• Fist appearance and death of Harold Ullman
• First appearance of the henchman, Willis
• After coming face to face with the Punisher in the previous issue, both he and Spider-Man are headed to the vigilante's boat for a meeting
• Punisher tells Spider-Man he wants the tape Robbie Robertson made for Peter Parker, and also information on where Tombstone is
• He's closer than he thinks, he's followed the Punisher's van with a bunch of armed henchmen, who he order's to attack at dawn
• Punisher tells Spider-Man that Tombstone killed a friend of his, Harold Ullman, and he intends to get justice for him, well, Punisher's definition of justice
  
• Tombstone overhears the conversation between the two, and learns about the tape from Robbie Robertson to Peter Parker
• Ben Urich goes to the hospital to see Robbie, and is greeted by his son, Randy, who tells him that Robbie will be able to walk again with physical therapy
• Ben tells Robbie he knows about the tape, and speculates it's about Tombstone, he then tells Robbie he knows where to find him if he wants to talk
• Two of Tombstone's men try to sneak up on Frank Castle, and one gets an eyeful of hot grease from the bacon he just cooked
• The other gets the butt of a gun to the head
• The one burned by grease exchanges information that there's two more on the deck above in exchange for medical aid
• They get greeted by a hail of gunfire that shreds through them
• The burned man then tells that they were supposed to get him to follow them to the Cloisters
• After playing Mary Jane the tape from Robbie, he asks her what he should do; Give the tape to Ben Urich, hand it over to the Punisher, or burn it, like Robbie requested
• Mary Jane tells him she won't make that decision for him, leaving Peter to deduce that it's Robbie's tape, and he alone has to decide what to do
• When he leaves, Mary Jane thinks to herself how fearful she is for him living the life of Spider-Man
• As Peter leaves, Tombstone enters the building, and find's Parker's name on the mailbox, along with the apartment number
• Meanwhile, the Punisher infiltrates the Cloisters
• While he takes out two guards immediately, he's jumped by four more
• It doesn't go well for them
• Back at the apartment, Tombstone grabs Mary Jane from behind by her hair, demanding to know where Peter is
• Punisher sneaks up on Tombstone's car, and as he opens the door is greeted by the Arranger, and Roland Rayburn, AKA Persuader
• Persuader uses his mind power on the Punisher to defuse him
• He tries to resist, and puts up a decent mental fight
• At the hospital, Peter meets with Robbie who reaffirms he wants the tape destroyed
• A nurse enters the room and tells Peter that his wife just arrived at the emergency room

Highlights

• First appearance of Aggie's Pub
• Spider-Man sees Robbie Robertson in a hospital bed from outside the window, and confirms the rumors are true that he is crippled, and possibly paralyzed by Tombstone, who broke his back
• Peter goes to the Bugle, and while there, Ben Urich says he overheard Robbie's phone call to him the evening of his injury, and questions what he was told
• Peter simply says that Robbie was gone by the time he got there
• Tombstone pays Robbie a visit in his hospital room, and whispers something to him that we don't get to know
• Robbie is left terrified
• Spider-Man goes to Aggie's Pub looking for answers, and asks the questions the only way he knows how, by breaking heads and windows
• Spider-Man learns from the bartender that the Arranger hired Tombstone
• A thug bares a weapon down on our hero as he's questioning the bartender, but a shadowy figure shoots him before he can pull the trigger
• Spider-Man gives chase, but can't catch up
• In his office, the Arranger talks to the Kingpin, but the call is cut off when Spider-Man pushes down on the receiver of the phone
• Spider-Man threatens harm on the Arranger if he doesn't tell him where Kingpin is, but the criminal just laughs, and shows him he has the threat on tape
• Spider-Man responds by breaking his television, only for guards to overhear the noise, and chase him out of the building
• The Arranger still has Roland Rayburn captive, and drugged up, needing the man to agree to use his mental powers of persuasion for Kingpin

• Robbie asks if Peter still has the tape he left him, and when he says he does, is told to burn it
• When Peter says he won't, Robbie tells him that Tombstone will kill his wife Martha, and son, Randy, if he doesn't
• As Peter walks down the hospital corridor with Mary Jane, telling her about what Robbie asked, the mysterious figure listens from a nearby room
• Peter goes to see Ben Urich at the Bugle to ask his advice
• While there, Ben gives him a phone message, and upon calling, he's told by the mysterious stranger to meet him on Liberty Island in one hour, and that he knows about the tape
• Rather than going as Peter Parker, Spider-Man shows up to the Statue of Liberty, and is greeted by gunfire, as the shadowed man runs off
• Spider-Man tackles the man, discovering it's the Punisher, who promptly points a gun at him
  
• In a cliffhanger ending, the Punisher demands the tape, and to know where Tombstone is

• Spider-Man finds a note to Peter Parker in Robbie's office, but not Robbie
• The note points him to a cassette player where Robbie has left a recording for him stating he's an accessory tor murder, and articles with the note about Tombstone
• Spider-Man is interrupted by J. Jonah Jameson, and Kate Cushing, who are looking for Robbie
• Kate tells Jonah that Robbie has been acting different as of late, and may be in trouble
• Tombstone and Arranger are having a conversation with Roland Rayburn, but he's not giving them the information they want to hear, resulting in Tombstone getting physical, dislocating his arm at the order of the Arranger
• Kingpin knows about Rayburn's ability to manipulate minds, and how it's made him rich, and wants him to work for him
• He tries to use this ability on the Arranger, but Tombstone knocks it out of him
• Seeing he's not going to help willingly, the Arranger has Rayburn drugged by a needle
• Tombstone receives a call from Robbie Robertson, asking him to meet him
• As Spider-Man swings through the rainy night, he continues listening to the tape on the portable recorder, taking him back to Robbie's high school years, and the origin of Tombstone
• Lonnie Lincolon, AKA Tombstone, hears that Robbie is writing a story on him for the school paper, specifically how he extorts money from other kids for "protection"
• After giving him a thorough beating, Lonnie tells Robbie that he's not going to write that, and that the two should be "friends"
• Robbie withdraws the story, but after seeing that things with him and Lonnie are just beginning, he vows to never do so again
• Flash forward eight years, and Robbie is the night desk catcher for a paper in Philidelphia
• He gets a call from a frantic man who tells him he has information on who killed Ozzy Montana, a local crime boss
• Robbie races off to meet him, but instead finds the dead man in the hands of Tombstone
• Afraid, Robbie doesn't say a word to anyone, or write any stories
• A month later, Robbie and his wife have moved to New York, and he's working for the Bugle, but he keeps following every story on Tombstone closely that others write - Specifically about him being arrested numerous times, but never tried
• Reference is made to Web Of Spider-Man 36, and The Spectacular Spider-Man 137
• At a bar, Robbie overhears Ben Urich talking about Tombstone, and the speculations of him being the number one hitman in Philadelphia
• Robbie snaps, and yells at Ben in front of everyone at the bar, telling him that journalists deal in rumors, and that he should grow up
• The tape finishes with Robbie telling Peter that all the deaths by Tombstone are on his hands for doing nothing, and he's going to meet Tombstone because tonight it ends
• Spider-Man goes to the Arranger, and demands to know where Tombstone is, he's pointed to Battery Park
• Tombstone meets Robbie at the park, and the editor pulls a gun on him saying he's going to arrest him
• Tombstone lunges at him, and though Robbie fires repeatedly, he's informed the hitman is wearing a vest
• Tombstone tells Robbie he's going to give him one more chance for old time's sake, then squeezes him, breaking his back
• Spider-Man hears his howl of pain, but when he arrives, Tombstone is long gone, leaving Robbie lying on the ground

• Captain America thinks all of the information he's receiving sounds odd, but he has his orders
• Peter and Mary Jane meet with Maggie Michaelson, and please for aid in amnesty for Elvira
• Robbie Robertson blows Kate Cushing off when she asks what's been wrong with him as of late
• She uses her report instincts to find a clue in an old newspaper article of Tombstone on his desk
• A guard is reading what looks like a book, but possibly a comic because he states, "This Claremont guy sure can write." A nod to Marvel writer, Chris Claremont
• Tarantula and Captain America break into the holding cells where Elvira is, and the villain questions her about Spider-Man, but in Spanish so that Captain America doesn't understand
• Tombstone goes to see Roland Rayburn, and tells him the Arranger wants him
• Mary Jane gets a call from Elvira pleading for help, and Spider-Man heads out on the mission, but knows it's a trap
• What he didn't expect was Captain America to be working alongside Tarantula, and they both attack
• Captain America disengages from the fight, questioning why he's there, and what he's doing
• Reference is made to The Amazing Spider-Man 236
• Tarantula stings Spider-Man with his poison tipped boot blade, and then proceeds to state out loud the terrible things he's going to do to him
• He doesn't get a chance, as Spider-Man deliver's a blow that breaks Tarantula's knee
• Hearing everything Tarantula said, Captain America walks away
• Captain America returns to Mr. South, and informs him he's aware that he's a rogue agent, and socks him one good in the face
• Peter and Mary Jane watch Elvira board a plane, being taken back to her country
• Tarantula is in cuffs, and also being returned home

• I prefer my Spider-Man stories to stay out of politics, and real-world hot topics
• I read Spider-Man to escape from that stuff, not absorb it more

• Spider-Man hears Armando scream, and returns to the Bugle, only to be confronted by Tarantula
• Just as quick as the villain strikes, his soldier's show up, fire at Spider-Man, and as he dodges their gunshots, they all disappear as if never there
• Hearing about the murder of his own employee, Jameson says he wants Ben Urich and Peter Parker put on the story
• He says if someone is murdering his employees, he wants answers because he doesn't want to leave town for no good reason
• Mary Jane meets an illegal immigrant named Elvira Corona working at the photo shoot, worried about being deported, and she wants Peter or Spider-Man to help her
• As Robbie leaves Jonah's office he ponders about his sighting of Tombstone recently
• F.B.I. agent, Gulliver South meets with Tarantula, and says though it's off the record, he has the support of the US government, and gives him a file on the illegal immigrants from his country hiding in the USA
• Peter meets Mary Jane for lunch and the two talk about him going back to school
• He has one stipulation though, he needs to pay for it himself, not have Mary Jane foot the bill
• She tells him about the job his editor called about (see oddities)
• Robbie looks towards Kingpin's tower, and wonders if Tombstone is inside, his answer comes when he sees him on the street
• Though he tries to tail him, Tombstone is aware, and stops to talk to him, reminding Robbie he told him years ago to stay out of his business
• Peter meets Ben, who is interviewing Maggie Michaelson, but while there, his spidey sense goes off when he sees a man nearby
• Following him down an alley, he's jumped by immigrants who say they don't want people around here taking photos
• Meanwhile, Tarantula is after his next traitor, Luis Corona, and his family
• Elvira Corona calls Mary Jane, and tells her she's at the church with her family, but that Tarantula is after them
• Spider-Man springs into action
• Despite the padre assuring them that they are safe on holy ground, Tarantula infiltrates the church
• Spider-Man intervenes
• Hearing the disturbance, citizens call the police, but being an illegal, Elvira, and her family, are afraid
• As Tarantula flees, Spider-Man sees that Elvira is being taken into custody by immigration
• As Tarantula broods over being defeated, Mr. South agrees, and says the government has brought in someone to assist him, and in walks Captain America

• Spider-Man's chronological order is off, though he's moved to Bedford Towers with Mary Jane, this issue sees him back at the Chelsea Apartments, which means the next issue, which continues where this leaves off, is also out of order

• It says that Spider-Man is three blocks away, plus he's swinging through the air, but he hears Armando Ruiz scream, who's inside a building?
• The Bugle is looking for Peter, and they call Mary Jane at a photo shoot? How do they know where she is, and how to reach her?

• Mary Jane tells him that he needs to go speak with Carter, and then uses Rocky III as an analogy
• Peter replies that using Rocky as a life lesson is like taking opera lessons from Twisted Sister
• A citywide blackout occurs, and Spider-Man heads out to get some photographs of the impact
• Stan Carter hits record on a tape recorder, and beings narrating his memoire
• The ongoing visions of Sin-Eater continue to haunt him
• Reference is made to Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man 5
• Through his visions of Sin-Eater and Jean DeWolff, we learn that Stan had to kill her first to fully commit himself to his holy mission
• Spider-Man comes across a woman in labor, trapped in the gridlocked traffic
• He convinces the man driving her to allow him to take her to the hospital
• And then learns that the man isn't her husband
• The woman tells Spider-Man she wants to name the child after him, and asks for his real first name
• Spider-Man responds that it's Poindexter
• While at the hospital, an officer tells Spider-Man that Electro is the cause of the outage, and that he's at the Con Ed Station
• Spider-Man actually doesn't want to go and confront him, instead stating the police can handle one guy
• Electro tells Sergeant Tork that he can overload every television in the city, turning them into bombs in everyone's home, or short out all critical hospital equipment, and will start doing so in one hour if he doesn't receive ten million dollars
• Spider sees some kids robbing a store, and webs them to a wall
• The kids clap back that he'll face off against children, but not against a real threat
• Spider-Man goes to Carter's apartment, and is told by the man that everyone has to face their demons on their own
• Carter also tells him that his doctor's say his injuries are psychosomatic
• Spider-Man tells him he's headed to Con Ed to exercise his demon, and when he leaves, Stan says that he is too, and puts on his Sin-Eater mask
• Spider-Man confronts Electro, and tells him that if he thinks he's so tough, then come fight him knuckle to knuckle, and not using electricity
• A child named Skip, who was outside the power station with his mother, wants to see the fight up close, and sneaks off to get a closer look only to be confronted by Sin-Eater
• Sin-Eater takes him hostage, putting a gun to his head
• The cops surround him, pleading with him to put the gun down, but he tells them that Sin-Eater has to have his moment, that he won't leave him alone until he does
• Inside, Spider-Man mops the floor with Electro
• Outside, Stan tells the cops that Sin-Eater thinks he can take them, he doesn't think he can, and tosses the kid aside, baring his gun on the officers
• They open fire, filling him with lead
• As Spider-Man exits the building with a webbed up Electro in arms, he sees the slumped over body of Stan
• Spider-Man rushes over to him, asking him what he's done
• In his final breaths, Stan says that he's won - With Sin-Eater dead, he can finally live
• Stan, and Sin-Eater, die
• Spider-Man tells Tork that Stan was so far gone that he really thought he and Sin-Eater were two different people
• Tork informs him that he, Stan, got the last laugh against the villain then because the gun wasn't even loaded

• The opening page of the issue, which is laid out like the front page of a newspaper, retells the ending of the previous issue, where Electro, AKA Max Dillon, challenged Spider-Man to a fight live on camera, but the hero didn't engage
• The odd part is that it then goes into detail on how Dillon robbed a jewelry store the previous day, but yet no cops bothered to try and arrest him at the studio?

Title: The Spectacular Spider-Man

Highlights

• First appearance of Duke, and Eve
• Additional first appearance from real life television hosts, Regis Philbin, and Kathly Lee Johnson (before she became Gifford)
• The issue picks up immediately where the last left off with Spider-Man on the ground after being toppled by Max Dillon, AKA Electro
• As the crowd surrounds Spider-Man, threating to unmask him, and one in particular person who was the owner of the car he crushed when he fell, wanting to beat him, Stan Carter arrives, ushering people away with his cane
• When they don't comply, he draws a sawed off shotgun, which gets his message across the crowd who quickly flee in all directions, worried that he'll revert to his Sin-Eater persona, and kill them
• The gun turns out to be a toy
• The police arrive, and Carter tells Spider-Man to take off before he ruins his, Carter's reputation
• No witnesses will tell the police anything, for fear that Sin-Eater will handle them later
• Spider-Man returns home, and when Mary Jane tries to join him in the shower, she see's his burns from battling Electro
• Peter gets angry, demanding privacy, which she refuses to give him
• He finally confides that he feels guilty about crippling Carter, and even worse because he doesn't want to feel guilty about it
• Scott Rosenberg arrives at the police station as Carter is being questioned, demanding that his client be charged, or let go
• He's let go
• On the way out, Carter tells Rosenberg to stop bothering him, and that he doesn't want to live off the horrible things he did, but rather, get on with his life
• Peter continues to confide in Mary Jane that he pulled his punches with Electro after realizing he permanently injured Carter, and that he's now doubting himself
• Meanwhile Carter is going by all the precincts, looking to be reinstated as an officer
• They all decline
• He then tries his luck at security companies
• They too decline
• Rosenberg returns to Carter's apartment, and out of options, he finally accepts the representation to tell his story for money
• Eve sits with Regis and Kathy Lee, talking about her new fashions, which Mary Jane is one of the models for
• Their next guest is Carter, and Peter, who is in the audience gets outraged that he's looking to make money on his killings
• Spider-Man interrupts the show
• The conversation doesn't go his way when Carter shouts him down that he doesn't know anything, certainly not about Jean DeWolff, as the two were lovers
• Seeing Spider-Man on TV, Max Dillon, AKA Electro, rushes towards the station to once again confront the hero
• In a cliffhanger ending, rather than fight him, Dillon humiliates Spider-Man on public television when the hero won't engage in a fight

• They let him go
• At Peter's apartment, Mary Jane is taking skimpy photos of herself to present to Peter in order to convince him that he should change careers to photographing models
• Peter sneaks in the room across the wall, and things get "marital"
• Max Dillon, AKA Electro is also out of prison, and his first order of business is to rob a jewelry store, but in his civilian clothes so as to not attract unwanted attention
• As Peter and Mary Jane walk down the street, he sees the headline on the Daily Bugle announcing Stan Carter being released, and Peter is none to happy about it
• Peter says he's going to suit up, find Carter, and tell him that he'll be watching, so he better be on the straight and narrow
• Spider-Man goes to see Carter, and finds out that when he last beat the man that he broke his jaw, clavicle, and inner ear, resulting in him permanently limping, stuttering, and partially deaf
• Unable to bear hearing anymore, Spider-Man retreats from the situation
• And also makes reference to Batman
• As Dillon tries to rob another jewelry store, the clerk sets off a silent alarm, bringing the cops
• Spider-Man see's the encounter as he swings nearby
• As Spider-Man intervenes, Dillon finally figures out that his ability to stick to walls is by some form of static electricity, and using his powers, severs that connection, sending Spider-Man crashing down on top of a car
• Rather than kill him immediately, Dillon decides he wants Spider-Man to know he's not only won, but can defeat him anytime he wishes

• Last appearance of Frank Gibbs, Vicky Gibbs, Jacob Gibbs, Tanya Gibbs, and Mary
• Peter Parker, still drugged up, and trapped in the Mad Dog Ward, sits in a wheelchair telling himself he is spider
• Zero asks Peter when he's going to lead another revolt, and is told that the last one was a bad idea
• Zero is then grabbed by two wardens, who tell him there's a mission downstairs for him
• Mary tells Peter about the lobotomy, and Peter tells her they have to get everyone here off the drugs so that he can help Zero
• Mary agrees to help
• Frank comes home to his kids Tanya and Jacob, and gets angry at them for not being in bed
• Tanya pulls a gun on him, and he finally tells them everything - His mob life, the reason their mother got put in the ward, and that he'll help them get her out, but that they'll be on the run the rest of their lives
• Arranger tells Kingpin about the man in the ward claiming to be Spider-Man, and the still unnamed doctor's wish to poke at his brain
• Kingpin tells Arranger that he was hired to make decisions, and he in turn tells the doctor to do whatever he wants with the man claiming to be Spider-Man as long as it doesn't compromise the ward
• Mary has done her part, and the patients are all off their medications and sedatives
• Peter too is feeling his strength return
• A riot in the ward starts again, and this time Peter is ready for the fight, but Brainstorm is brought into it and ordered to stop everyone
• Peter makes short order of him
• Meanwhile, Frank has infiltrated the hospital, and puts a gun to the unnamed doctor, demanding his wife be released
• Peter, Vicky, and Frank leave the hospital, taking the doctor with them, and stating their going to put the police onto the illegal operations of the hospital
• From the rooftops, Zero watches with a smile
• Peter in disguise leads Ben Urich to the hospital, promising a story, but upon their arrival, are invited to a planned press conference where the Arranger is explaining that when Mr. Fisk, as the major stock holder of the hospital, found out about the illegal operation there that he had the doctor arrested
• Peter see's Mary leaving, though she doesn't recognize him in disguise, she tells him that the story they're shilling is a lie, and that she just quit
• In their car, Frank, Vicky, Jacob, and Tanya head West - Though they're happy to be reunited, they're officially on the run from Kingpin

• Detectives and officer's search Kraven's home, and find a confession that he was posing as Spider-Man, causing the chaos across New York
• Vermin ambushes Spider-Man, and the two battle, with the beast dragging Spider-Man underwater
• Spider-Man manages to get loose, and hides in the shadows, sending Vermin into a panic
• Spider-Man tries reasoning with Vermin, but when he tells the beast he wants to take him out of the darkness of the sewers, it sends Vermin into a rage, and the battle begins again
• Spider-Man leads Vermin out into the streets, where the sun has risen
• The light causes him to recoil in fear, and Spider-Man is able to securely web him up
• As the cops arrive, they make note of how Spider-Man still has it in him to look out for the beast, after all he's been through with Kraven
• Kraven is buried

• I'm sure when Kraven's Last Hunt launched in the 80's that its dark tone really took readers by surprise, but in 2026, it's just another day

• A couple weeks have passed, as made reference by a pair of cops who talk about Spider-Man being out of control for that period of time
• Unbeknownst to them they're referencing Kraven, who has shot, buried, and assumed the identity of Spider-Man
• Vermin grabs a woman off the street, leaving her unconscious body for what he thinks is Spider-Man to find
• He runs into a pair of police, and while one is being eaten alive by his rats, the other reminds him of his mother
• She manages to shoot him in the gut, but he gets the upper hand, licks her face, and runs away
• Mary Jane goes to Joe Robertson's house, intent on asking him questions about her missing husband, but after being welcomed in, changes her mind, and leaves
• Kravin intends on one more test to prove he's a better Spider-Man by finding Vermin, and killing him
• Kraven heads to the sewers and battles Vermin, winning
• As he carries him out of the sewers, back at Kraven's mansion, Spider-Man's hand breaks through the ground where he was buried

Low Points

• Nothing's really happening, and the impact of the first chapter is starting to fade fast
• The last issue of Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man crediting Jim Shooter as Editor-In Chief - Jim was fired in April 1987 from Marvel Comics
