Comics Corner: DC Comics Presents 47

Title: DC Comics Presents
Issue Number: 47
Release Date: July 1982

Highlights
  • First appearance of Prince Adam / He-Man, Cringer / Battle Cat, Man-At-Arms, Teela, The Sorceress, Skeletor and Beast-Man
  • Special appearance by the Man of Steel, Superman
  • It's interesting to see the conception of these characters prior to appearing in the animated series - They have very different physical characteristics and personalities
  • It's interesting to see the original premise of Masters of the Universe, where both halves of the power sword are needed to enter Castle Grayskull - Skeletor has one half, the other half is hidden somewhere on Eternia
  • Skeletor opens a rift and it pulls Superman through it to Eternia
  • Superman punches Skeletor in the stomach and Skeletor returns the blow in kind with a magical blast far superior to Superman's strength
  • He-Man and Superman meet
  • He-Man knows not only of the planet Earth, but He-Man, because his mother is from Earth
  • Skeletor uses his magic on Superman to make the Man of Steel fight He-Man
Low Points
  • Prince Adam is very arrogant and Man-At-Arms doesn't appear to enjoy training him - Or really like him all that much
  • Prince Adam is strong right from the start - He ties a barbel with two weights on it in a knot
  • Prince Adam is all for fighting someone in a bar - Where he's in drinking and singing
  • Prince Adam is rude to Teela, even referring to her as, "Woman".
  • The Sorceress meets Prince Adam and Cringer in a cave and turns them into He-Man and Battle Cat with her magic - Where is the sword lifting and the, "By the power of Grayskull!"?
  • He-Man fights with an ax
  • With his display of strength and power as Prince Adam, there really appears to be no reason to transform him into He-Man
  • Superman randomly spots a time-space warp (whatever that is), to conveniently return him to Earth at the end of the story
Oddities
  • Unique read for what was the foundation of the soon to be mega hit cartoon series, but definitely not the He-Man (and related characters) I know and love
  • If not for what it had evolved into, this story and its characters would have been quickly and long forgotten
Rating (based on a 1 through 5 bat symbols grading system)

  1. The Low Points are actually kind of funny.

    1. A little bit. It was shocking when first reading it. One of those, "What's going on here," moments.
